Maybe I've confused the situation.
My understanding (which may be wrong!) is that in the UK you're right that single phase is 240V and three phase 415V.
But other countries have 230/240V three phase (namely the US, Canada).
So most three phase motors are configurable for international use (configure the windings depending on your local three phase supply).
The point is that just because the motor says 240V on it, it may not be single phase, as most three phase motors are capable of being connected both 415V (star) and 240V (delta) three phase. They are usually marked with a Y for star configuration or a triangle for delta.
To doubly add to the confusion some big motors are started in one configuration then switched to the other.
