primus stove on heating oil with extra heater dome
« on: October 11, 2015, 10:35:42 PM »
been experimenting with a primus stove as a quick heat source. some of you may remember primus stoves from their youth. i used one for cooking up till the late eightys. i brought a couple on ebay to play around with. one was shot the other one i have got working with a new leather washer and a bit of fiddling with. some muppet had  dismantled the  non return valve and put it back together the wrong way round. now it is fixed it is working as designed. as i wanted to use it for heating rather than cooking i brought  a thing called a heating dome. ex mod used for tent heating it said. the link is here.

it works great and get the yurt toasty in no time. at around 16 hours on a ltr of fuel very cheap to run as well. it just sits on the top of the stove and gets red hot. no CO with the monitor sitting above it for a few hours. a few fumes as i am using central heating oil. if i was to use low odour parafinn i am sure there would be no smell, but it doesn’t bother me anyway. not at the price that stuff is compared to heating oil.

i could but as all my bio is going in the van and heating oil is 59p a litre it would not be economical. in the interests of science i will try it to see how well it burns.

just tried running it on bio. it produced lots of heat, but all in the wrong places. it doesn't vapourise but pours hot bio all over the stove which then catches fire.  didn't quite burn the yurt down, but close enough to a out of control fire to not try that one again.....

Sounds like something that should be replicated at the BBB.

We'll have to put it to the H&S comity to ensure it breaches enough rules.

spoke to the person selling those domes and he said they work just as well on a gas ring, if you are too wimpy to try the primus stove.

There's a place for wine labels.

What's the theory of theses domes?

I'd guess it's a surface which gets hot and radiates heat rather than convection.

I suppose the dome shape radiates it in all directions, would a small colander do the same job?

i don't see why not. the metal is a bit thicker than a colander so it may distort a bit. but because of the air flow it gets red hot and stays there. around 400C. you would have to use a stainless one. if you can find one cheaply. i did try a stainless conical strainer. but suspect the holes are too small.
i take no responsibility for where you may find a suitable strainer.

just had a quick look and these look suitable.
