My Bio after 5 days settling
« on: September 25, 2015, 02:15:40 PM »

This is my 2nd attempt at demeth then bubble for 12 hours. The Bio has been settling for 5 days made with NaOH and taken from 25 litres from the bottom of the tank. The photograph was taken 10 minutes after being shaken. A soap test shows approx 50ppm. I tried this after talking with Richard (Oakwoodtv) who made it sound easy. I must say that I'm well happy with the results.

Good result, well done!

It's much more fun if you make an emulsion though ... there's hours of fun to be had trying to recover it!

Nice one Gaz, next time try it after bubbling to get a starting point and then at 24hr and 48hrs, if the meth is removed then you should find that most soap has dropped after a day or two.

Easy peasy innit, been doing that for 9yrs now, I don't even bother to bubble nowadays.

I just demeth and settle but then I do have a supa doopa demeth system so there, ha ha ha la la la.

Its the hassle free way to finish bio no water no drying and no chance of emulsions
let time do the hard work for you.

Doesn't it bother you that your bio will end up around 600ppm water.

Hi Dave. The last one I did both the bio and water are clear but when the temp drops the bio goes a little hazy then clears up againe when the temp rises. I will take a snap of this one when the bio has cleared.

Hi Chug, I will do that to see the settling process. On this one when I switched the bubbler off I could see my heater which is 8" from the bottom. A bit surprising really. I've got the bubbles rising up one side of the drum so that it creates a flow across the bottom then up turning the whole lot over. It seems to clear really fast but I didn't check for the soap content, just put a lid on and left it a few days.

Exactly what I've found, also the bio from w/washed stays clear at 3degs less than the bio from a settled batch.

This is after 2 days settling.

The same after it has cooled down.

Has anyone got an explanation for this. I would have thought that if the water had dropped out it would stay clear but when warm the bio is clear and when cool it clouds like Dave says.

As the test warms during daytime/sun the suspended water becomes dissolved and the biodiesel layer is clear. As it cools the bio can't hold as much water so some becomes suspended and it clouds again.

If you put it in the fridge overnight it would encourage more water to become suspended, if this water increased to a certain level it would become free water and drop into the bottom layer. When it was removed from the fridge it would probably be noted that it would stay clear at a lower temperature. I would also think the opposite is true in that on a warm day some water from the bottom layer would migrate to the bio, making it go cloudy when cooled at a slightly higher temperature. I've not tried the above, just my mutterings!

That makes some sense. I wondered if it was to do with the quality of the bio to start with. Thanks.
