"She filled it with water because it was over heating"  ... bet it ran cool after that.

I remember a mate, years ago, drove his Series Land Rover into a large pond.  It was deeper than any of us imagined.  It floated for a second or two whilst still travelling forward and then sank so just half the truck cab was visible above the water.   He'd removed the door tops so the seat squabs floated up and slowly drifted out the windows.

We pulled it out, drained and flushed every cavity we could think of, took the plugs out and turned it over a few times and he quite happily drove home.  The engine, although never quite the same, ran OK for several years.

There's one word in the title that explains all, her.

A friend of the wife's once filled her metro up with engine oil, right to the top of the rocker cover, then wondered why it was hard to start and smoked really badly.

I have to admit a mistake i made years ago - i dont quite know how i managed it now, but i did, so there...

(it was on a v8 forward control, that only had small access hatches to the engine, so maybe that was it - even so, you would think anyone would notice the radiator is at the front...)

Topped up the radiator.  Topped it up some more...  and some more...  Then realised id poured in more water than the entire coolant system should hold.

Then went underneath, and drained all the water again.  I suspect it probably all came out fine, but i still did another two oil changes in quick succession.

No issues, other than the bother.  But then i did not turn the keys...

I suppose at least she tried. same as the woman who walked into the motor factors asking for a small can of oil, telling the bloke behind the counter that the oil light hadn't been on very long, it didn't need much.
He opened his mouth to speak, then closed it. He could see there was only one way she would learn.

A bloke where I first worked did that to a Volvo, topped it right up to the filler cap.  He arrived with smoke pouring from under the bonnet, which when lifted revealed no filler cap and oil EVERYWHERE, the smoke being from the oil on the hot manifold and downpipe.  It's a wonder that it didn't catch fire, and that he drove it all the way in like that.

My partners sister did somthing similar...

Put the oil in the water (did not run the car).  I sorted that for her, and gave her a lift to the local halfrauds to pick up some more oil (as she had none left by then).

I left her to fill it up, after making sure she knew the right place to pour it.

When she came in, i asked how much it needed.  She looked confused,

"I put it all in" was the reply
