Casting concrete worktops
« on: October 29, 2014, 08:42:39 PM »
I use a sheet sander held against the side when vibrating smaller cast concrete work tops, also have a small Makita vibrating poker if you want to borrow it

Interested in the concrete worktops.  Done some googling on them in the past and nearly tried making them at home but  thought better of it.

Of most interest is the polishing and sealing.

I just read up about it and watched some you tube vids, like you i fancied having a go so i talked a customer into letting me make one, turned out ok.

i have all the bits needed to make one if you fancy a go? water fed polisher and discs, like these

Vibrating poker and even some glass chippings

Looks pretty good, I'm impressed.

I really fancy having a go, but no requirement or outlet for any worktops at the moment.  Did you seal them with anything, all same travertine or marble?

That grinder ... it looks like the water is fed to the center of the spindle, is that the case?

Yes same sealer as used on granite work tops etc and yes the polisher is water fed down the centre of the spindle, no different to a grinder except for speed control really

Cool!

Looks like you cast it up side down rather than in situ?  Any reinforcement?

I'm guessing you cash the holes inside it, not cut them out later ?

I fancy making one for work when I sort out the new toilets, probably 8 foot long, with 2 sinks in it

I'm guessing they're crazy hard wearing and wouldn't be bothered if they get steam cleaned every day ?
(probably just lightly / at a distance)

Yep, everything done in the mould, cast upside down, concave quadrant in the corners to give round edges, half round to make the drain grooves etc
Very hard wearing but they will stain unless sealed

More interest in your worktops than bio ... I vote for a demo at BBB 2015.

It would, at this point, be fitting to add a comment about walking on water ... but I'll refrain.

Posting those is just a cop out.  We want a demo ... do we have to have a poll on the subject?
