Miss fuel (is it a killer?)

hi all

just a quick thought before work, I've had my pug 406 4 years now and gone through 6 sets of 4x glow plugs, for the most part 99% were knackered of the amount but being as I bought 4 new to change each time I changed out the remaining working plugs each time anyways (one behind pump is a biatch).

my recent findings are 1 week ago car started playing up on cold morning startup due to cold snap or winter coming, so whipped out all plugs and only 1 was dead (as late at night put a working old one in), now 1 week later I had to whip out the 4 plugs again to find another 2x dead, 3 in a week odd, now all year been fine till I have been using miss fuel or more over miss fuel has "PETROL" in it.

my thoughts are could the plugs be dying due to not likeing petrol squitted at them??

I can't see any particular reason why it should. In theory, all the plugs should pack up at the same moment, if they have had the same use.
I think it's probably just coincidence.

I've had various lengths of time from glow plugs, fitted a set and a few months later not starting well so checked and two had died, replaced, all ok again, then a few months later same again, upon checking the third of original 4 was dead, replaced all ok again, was fine for about a year and played up, checked the original one left from the first 4 was fine but two of the replacements were dead so one GP lasted years whilst the others failed along the way in six months or less.

Try timing how long power is being fed to them ! (not how long it takes for the light to go out) If the relay system is feeding power for too long they will have seriously shortened life.

hmmm I guess so or like this time within days of each other... would of expected plugs to last longer though but that could be wishful thinking I spose...

always been named plugs bosch / bosch duraterm / ngk, and from what I see buying expensive has no bearing they all live about the same life span.

now this I can relate too, had this myself, I guess they just come more apparent in winter / cold start times when they are needed especially the pug 1.9TD engine, there needed even hot engine times, this engine takes some cranking over, brilliant for veg running but when you get it started

you may have something here! I know about the light going out isn't the finish of the cycle it is infact halfway, I would say about 20 seconds total, now I got a feeling this 20 seconds happens if the engine is hot or not so it could always be running its course and wearing out the plugs faster.

now don't quote me as im not 100% on this but I have been told that newer cars senses if the engine is hot and will turn off the plugs much faster if this is the case im not sure... but I have seen on newer motors the light goes out instant on a hot engine.
