Interesting idea to use a heat exchanger, but wouldn't it be more efficient to use the coolant rather than the air in the vapour circuit for the cold side of the heat exchanger? And for that matter, How about just using a heat exchanger as a condensor? Has it been tried?

A condenser is a heat exchanger.

As Jim says, the idea of a SHHE is to pre-heat the vapour before returning to the plant. In doing so, some energy will be removed from the methanol vapour.

Ok, got it.

I've got a bid on a heat exchanger on eBay as we speak.

A SHHE is well worth the effort of fitting,
the benefits of preheating the returning gasses are not only to save time but will reduce your lecy bill as well.
