Never made a mark on them. Main thing is, don't go too fast, they say max 40mph. In my experience, it's more like 10mph. If you can do 40, you don't need them on......

I could imagine spinning the wheels would cause the chain to damage the tyre, especially if the wheel spun in the chain. But if that is happening, they're not fitted properly.

I usually run the tyres at around 45psi. I found letting them down to 35 gave a better ride with the chains on, and more grip with them off, just had to put up with the slightly wobbly feel when back on tarmac. What will kill the chains is running them on tarmac, they really don't like that, and I don't expect the tyres do either.
It is a bit of a pain, when the road is only semi covered in snow, too much to get up the hills without them, but not enough on the flats.

Car chains would just fold up on a transit, gotta be at least the lightest of the heavy duty ones.
There are some fantastic ones about. The trouble is, its a big jump between the just about adequate £100 ones, and the next step up, which seems to be about the £250 mark. I'd love a pair of them, but can hardly justify it.

These are the ones I had

Five year guarantee with these

This is a brilliant idea

To be honest, I'm surprised how the prices have dropped, and the options increased since I bought mine

Incidentally does anybody want to buy some snow chains, I've got a set I'll never use lying around, if it gets that bad in the UK I just won't leave the house :p

What size wheel are they for? Are they heavy duty 4WD ones? In other words, are they for a Transit?

Mine were brilliant, go anywhere, so long as I was in no hurry. Wrecked them in the end, but they did two years.
Nah, just middle car sized, bought them for the estima during that really bad winter a 3 years back but never got stuck enough to use them, for a rear wheel drive auto people wagon it handled really well even when nigh on axle deep in the white stuff.

Oh well.
I'm very tempted by that pair with the five year guarantee. I'm sure my other ones would still be ok, if it wasn't for the acrobatics on the steep hill, but they just didn't feel quite strong enough.

cheap ones are hard to fit especially on a cold night. the better ones are quick and easy to put on.

Mine were a bit of a piglet to get on. They do recommend fitting them a couple of times before you need to use them in anger, and I'm glad I did. The first time I fitted them, it was like they were never going to go on.
Getting them on in -6, in a howling gale, with frozen hands, and the rust on the wheel arches slashing your wrists is fun, especially if it is dark as well.

haven't you been watching ice road truckers?  trying to get the snow chains on in a-40 in a blizzard.i live on a c road, so we don't get gritted. and i and right on a blind bend on a hill. i send for supplies when it gets that bad and collect them from the top of the field, where you come in for the BBB.

I've been driving for 12 years now. (Wow, that makes me feel old!)

Never needed snow chains yet and never got stuck. I've carried bits of carpet and a shovel when it snows just in case, but never needed them.

Am I just lucky?

Same here although with 20 years driving now, once took me an hour to crawl out of a car park on a hill that was just a sheet of ice top to bottom but that's been it so far.
Had to stop and dig someone out once they dug themselves back in about 10 yards later, after a second attempt they finally got moving, I got back in my Serena and drove on no shovel required. Lucky or good I'm never quite sure, either way I'm doubtful I'll be so cocky in the Transit.

I've been on the road 17 years, but only had a provisional for the first four..........

I guess it just depends where you live. From the main road to home is around three miles of single lane track. I do wonder if the council even knows it is here. Lots of deep banks and steep hills, and most of it is wrong facing, so never gets the sun in the summer, let alone winter.

It's not uncommon to have to abandon the vehicle in a farmers yard about a mile from home, and either get a lift home, or walk, when the snow is down.
One year some thieving Tw*t took a tool box out of my (unlocked) van, that I had had to abandon. It must have been a local farmer, because there was that much snow, no one else would have been using the road. Pretty sure I know who it was........

A couple of years back when t snowed quite heavily we took the kids out for a trip into the New Forest.

So out in the middle of nowhere there was a car stuck in the middle of the road, and around it are six of these ponced up 4x4s with spotlights and winches with blokes out "helping" (presumably waited all year for this!).

They all turned as they heard us approach - you should've seen their faces when we detoured around them down the slope, through the ditch and back up the other side, it was priceless!  (I guess the Delica looks like a people carrier rather than a 4x4).

We went on to build snowmen and watch the deer in a deserted and perfectly quiet part of the forest - a really lovely family experience.
