Mark

turn off and unplug router from mains

leave for 5 minutes

Power back up

Some routers need a while offline to allocate a new IP

I've been surfing and found that virgin media provide a static IP address.
The only way to change it is to unplug it for a week or two,
and that ain't gana happen.

Ring Virgin and ask them to change it

Tell them you are getting refused access to some sites

If it's only fr 24hrs then I'm not worried, but if it's going to take longer to fix this problem then I will.

Just been on my daughters phone and left a message for panelbeater.

You could always try a proxy sever. Not sure if the forum software would just block it anyway but could be worth a go

Do you know, it's times like this that I realise just how little I know about all this computer stuff.

What's a proxy sever ?

It is a computer that sits in between your ISP and the web. You send your request to the proxy and it sends a request out to the selected site but from it's own IP address, not yours.
Google 'proxy server' and you should find an explanation and a few free online proxies.

They are commonly used to hide peoples identity on the internet when they are up to naughty things but, in your case, hiding your identity may just stop the VOD thinking you are a naughty banned person.

The other option, if you are friendly with your neighbours, is to borrow a bit of their wifi. If you can see their router (the SSID or name that it transmits) and they are willing to give you the passkey then you can just log on to their network and you will not be banned.
Or, if one of them has BT broadband and a home hub or business hub, it will probably create a BT openzone hotspot.
You can connect to that and then purchase a BT openzone voucher (online) to completely legitimately use the service.
even better, if you have a friend somewhere else that has BT broadband, ask them for their login details and you can use the openzone for free (one of the extras that comes with being a BT customer - which, I hasten to add, I am not. I am with Plusnet)

I think there is a proxy server called hidemyip.com. Its free, unlike some that want money to use them.
