Pleasant change from rejecting spammers from the forum today ... a new member, RIngrey signed up who doesn't appear on the veg forum.

Just like to say welcome and please put up a post introducing yourself ... every one's welcome from novice to expert!

We would very much appreciate feed back from outside the gaggle of loonies putting the wiki together on how we're doing!

My processor will be arriving Friday so hopefully get my first batch of Bio started this weekend. I'm really trying to find what cars are considered Biodiesel safe, provided good Biodiesel is used, as family members are really showing some interest in this new hobby of mine.

Can everyone list what cars they drive and what % Bio/Petro-diesel they use. What problems you have had, if any. If I get enough info I will compile a database and post on this and other threads as an informative guide to those new to this subject.

I personally will only be using B50 as most of my WVO is solid @ room temp so hopefully by blending with regular diesel it will prevent clouding and HDME's from forming.

Vehicle suitability for bio or veg is probably one of the most commonly asked questions on the vegoildiesel forum.  It would be an ideal subject for a page on the wiki, but as Tony says, it gets a little subjective.  We could, if every member collaborated by supplying info, start compiling a list but I have my doubts that many members would bother ... cynical aren't I!

The general rule is that virtually all diesels will run on good quality bio, the only possible exceptions being very late high end cars and very old ones which might have rubber fuel lines.

What is the issue with late high end cars? Are all injection systems suitable for good quality biodiesel? If running B50 will most issues surrounding using biodiesel go away? Cheers

DPFs don't work satisfactorily with bio and I had very vague recollections of a few cars monitoring exhaust gas components, but I can't find any reference to it now.  If it's true they will see different levels of gases and most likely go into limp home mode.

Not exactly my area of excellence I'm afraid.

There aren't really any issues running most diesels on bio, providing it's well made.  There are occasional reports of IP seals going but it's hard to say if that's the result of bio or just ware and tear.  Most common problem I've heard of is disintegrated spill back pipes.  My own experience on the Disco was that the spill back pipes certainly looked like they softened to the point of disintegration, but no such troubles with any other pipe work.

B50 probably won't prevent such a problem occurring, just delay it, so if you are going to the trouble of making bio, grab the full financial advantage and go for B100.

What car are you proposing to use the bio in?

Currently the whole family has expressed and intrest in using it to some degree. The cars concerned include, Pug 306, Fiesta 1.4, Citroën Xantia and an X-Type Jag.

welcome Ringrey,

all diesel engines should run on well made biodiesel, it's just as Jukian said, older ones have different rubber that isn't bio compatible, and newer ones have so much computerised crap on to try and get better mpg and lower emissions, their brainbox gets confused with bio and throws up error messages and go into limp home mode, but if you are determined enough even older and newer vehicles can be worked on to fix their problems.

Hello Ringrey, there`s a possible wee problem you could have with hmce, you are only allowed 2500 litres a year and the jag would probably do that on it`s own ;D , what I would suggest is that you make your allowance and then sell your processor to a family member who can then make their bit etc. Then buy it back next year, you are not allowed to processor share. I am not trying to put you off, just tryin to keep you safe and legal.

We will only be using 50/50 mix so the bio allowance should last the 12 months.  :)
