Discovery 2 TD5
« on: September 05, 2022, 08:27:39 AM »
My car didn't come home last night. I think the electric fuel pump in the tank packed up.
I'd also like to think it wasn't because of the slightly bad batch of bio I put in the tank and it was going to pack in at some point anyway.

Anyone on here running a disco 2 on B100?

Why would you knowingly put dodgy bio in the tank?

I didn't have any non dodgy bio to put in so it was a choice between paying £1.86 a liter or seeing how my 1st batch of 90% reacted bio would run in it.
I've come to the conclusion that after talking to a mechanic who has fixed loads of disco 2s and seeing how many Youtube videos there are on how to replace the pump, that it's a part that fails with regularity.

if you cant hear the pump and the solenoid clicks, then its dead, ive changed many, im running my defender td5 on bio, have for about 8 yrs, and ive also messed up my mrs the other day, bad bio , when it got older than 2 month, had to clean out her whole fuel system and get the injectors cleaned, they had never seen injectors so bad, £548 later..

I don't make BD in the winter, stockpiling enough made in the warm months of summer to last from about October when I stop making it through until April/May when I restart. The NEWEST BD I'm putting in my car come the Spring is 6 mths old & I've had fuel that was a year old when I forgot about 100L behind the shed. Never had a problem with any of it, regardless of age. New or old it all looks the same in the containers, comes out looking the same & the car runs the same on it.

What goes wrong with yours after 2 months?

I was wondering the same.
My own simple rule borne from experience - If it isn't crystal clear like a pint of lager it doesn't go in the car.
I have Bio that is months old keeps for me too.

That's a justification we are all familiar with...

I've come to the conclusion that after talking to a mechanic who has fixed loads of disco 2s and seeing how many Youtube videos there are on how to replace the pump, that it's a part that fails with regularity.

One thing I would add about partially reacted biodiesel - it's not just a case of having 90% biodeisel and 10% veg oil - you'll have a huge quantity of partly split oil molecules, mono and di-glycerides, possible still some soaps, catalyst and methanol from the reaction itself - these are all bad news for your fuel system.  A mix of biodiesel and veg oil is much kinder, but not what you've got.

Add into that mixing it with diesel, you probably have some combination that made sludges in the tank.

Part converted is more acceptable for oil burning boilers but definitely not for cars.

Are you water washing (which will remove the partly converted nasties and chemicals left over) or standing to settle (which likely won't).

1ml unreacted on a 10/90 test it approximately equivalent to 5% unreacted triglycerides and 5% unreacted mono and diglycerides.

Correction from recent calculations;

1ml dropout equates to approx 5% unreacted oil and 10% mono's and diglycerides. Bad news for the recent cold weather.

no water washing, just the old jamesrl system, so i demeth and then bubble for 24hrs and settle for about a week, i then centrifuge it and though a filter before it goes into my car...

maybe you guys who are keeping it have it sealed, i left mine in my settling tank and it was far from sealed..
