Volvo V40 thoughts?
« on: November 20, 2016, 05:21:24 PM »
I appear to have just bought this car

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VOLVO-V40-1-9-Diesel-Estate-2001-Sport-Lux-Model-/371785983288

I see Reckless had one a while back but does anyone have any knowledge of the fuel system and what to expect (in-tank filter?  fuel filter easy to change?)

Pretty certain some folk run them on veg, although I would guess, twin tanked.
There is certainly one dude on VOD who runs a similar Volvo successfully, either on veg or bio. Can't remember his name though, he has a picture of it in his sig.
Pretty certain they are known to be robust.
Can't help much with specifics.

Fingers crossed, sounds like it was maintained well up to the last owner and then just the usual old car malaise.  Can't grumble for the price though, it'll pay for itself with 6 months of bio making which is the way we look at these things.

Ah yes, I had one of these.

No issues on good bio. Ran OK on bad bio but was down on power. Fuel filter is a pig to change - you need to move the fuse box out the way.

I never opened up the tank to have a look so can't say if there was a strainer or anything. Certainly never had an issue on that end, unless the bio solidified. Even then a fan heater under the car for 20 mins was enough to get it going.

Yeah just found the fuel filter under the fusebox.  Still easier than the Delica though, now THAT was a pig of a job. :)

When I had a proper job I had a C70, it was petrol, but what a lovely car.  If the V40 is half as good you'll have some very comfortable journeys.

I got quite a lot of ribbing about it being an old man's car and needing driving gloves to use it, but after a ride in it the naysayers mostly changed their tune.

Seems nice enough, but a bit skittery over bumps - I think come the warmer months some suspension bushes need changing.  Far too cold to be dismantling cars at the moment!
