1.5d saxo, bosch, wvo, cold start timing
« on: November 09, 2014, 10:53:06 PM »
Hi... being running my 02 plate saxo, 1.5d tud5 with bosch ve fuel pump on wvo for two - the years now.  Now have a problem when starting from cold (I think the cold start mechanism on the pump isn't working right).

It starts fine (for wvo) when  12 degrees celsius or above (although about a minute of hunting). Goes like a beauty when warm!

New Beru glow plugs (which definitely have 12v) and fuel filter.  No bubbles in fuel line. I mix 5% petrol and a little 2 stroke into the wvo.

But when it gets chilly (like 10 degrees celcius
or below) the car takes about 10+ seconds of turnover to start, and keeps losing power once started, until warm.

When starting from cold, the engine management light comes on, fault code P1205 (5th injector problem ?!)

I've also found that when the car stalls, there is a buzzing clicking coming from the fuel pump (from below?).

I suspect the cold start device which should advance the timing.

Can anyone comment on this?

Many thanks in advance...

May be it is something to do with whatever cold start mechanism is on that engine. I don't really know much about it. If it's all been fine in previous years, then it could be.
There is no doubt that starting and warming up is more difficult, once the general temp starts dropping, an 10C seems to be the point at which things get more difficult.
Personally, I'd not bother with the two stroke. I'd up the petrol to 10%, and see how you get on with that.
It depends a bit on how good your WVO is. 25% diesel will cure a lot, if all else fails.

Thanks for your reply... anyone know what the clicking sound is likely to be?

I'm not familiar with the setup on that vehicle. When you say the fuel pump, is it coming from the injection pump it self, or the in-tank pump, if it has one?

Probably something that needs a visual inspection.

I've noticed that some vehicles do a lot of clicking on startup, and have put it down to the heater plug solenoid. On newer ones, it's not just a case of the plugs coming on and then going off, they turn themselves on and off depending on the temperature, and feed back they get from sensors.

Thanks gm. Its the bosch ve injection pump itself. The clicking is so fast it sounds more like a buzz. Its not the glow plug control relay for sure...  coming from the bottom of the pump.
