I think it's two different storys, wrapped up as one.

Coastguards said another substance, described as "vegetable oil-like", was found washed up at Pedn Vounder beach, near the Minack Theatre, on Sunday.

They say the white gloopy stuff smelled like firelighters. Looks to me as though some paraffin may have reacted with something, and congealed.

Odd it would kill a dog though, you'd think it would just throw it up and carry on.

I dont see how eating some salty congealed veg oil would kill a dog. Mine eats cow pats, decomposing dead animals (including marine life found on the beach) and all sorts of unpleasant things with no ill effects (except some horrendous smelling wind and/or breath at times), She is also rather fond of both veg oil and biodiesel and will actively try to lick up any spills or lick the tops of 20litre tins if she gets the change.

None of these things have caused her to even look unwell, certainly not dead.

I can only assume that it was not as reported or that it was some kind of pampered pooch that had never had chance to behave like a normal dog and therefore had no immunity to anything.

It is tempting to collect some of that stuff and try a doctor pepper test on it
