Pending extended downtime

So we have a slight problem coming up.  As you all know the static IP change went quite smoothly, however, some other things have changed.

BE Unlimited have been bought by Sky, who don't do residental static IP addresses or reverse DNS.  Business only - though they are looking into it for existing BE customers like me.

They are just taking on customers, not BE's excellent network, or, as it sounds, the very technically excellent support staff in Bulgaria, whome it has been a pleasure to work with in the past.

So, I'm seriously considering jumping ship to PlusNet fibre for 76mbps down and 19.5mbps up.  They do static IPs and RDNS entries.

Sounds straightforward, however, my line isn't a BT one, it's also with BE - and migrations in this manner in the past have sometimes left a window of weeks with no broadband.  Something to do with stopping one taking down the other.

As far as this place goes we have a few choices:

- put up with downtime until it's sorted
- move to a paid host
- move temporarily onto a dedicated server stateside owned by a good friend of mine that I'm sure wouldn't mind lending it out (he barely uses it, even though it's something daft like $50 a month)

What do you think?

The temporary move sounds good to me.
I don't think it's right for you to pay for a host,
although most on here would help with the costs, I seam to remember you and the other mods didn't want it to go down that road.

Will the change cost you a significant amount ?

No not really, it's similar price-wise to my old ADSL2+, though it does mean signing an 18 month contract.

I'm with BE too.... and I'm going to jump ship to fibre too.... sky suck... don't want to be with them for any longer than I have to

but... sky are taking on the BE network too... they bought BE because they can;t keep up with the throughput/demand of all there new online services etc... or that's what I was told anyway

I'll go with whatever you decide, and I'm happy to donate too :-)


(p.s. what about dyndns etc.. ? been using them for years to access cctv at work)

I don't begin to understand all this but If you do decide to jump ship then the holiday stateside sounds the least painful, at least to my uneducated brain.

Go on, now tell me that option is the most work for you Tony.  :)

DynDNS is OK for a simple low traffic website, the problem is reverse DNS for e-mail.  Some of the big mailservers (Yahoo, Hotmail etc) check the inbound mail to make sure that the sending server isn't lying about who it is - this is done with reverse DNS to make sure the send's IP resolves to the reported sending domain.  There is no way to do this with DynDNS.

Unfortunately it would only be the forum software and databases that get to go on holiday, much though I'd like to personally deliver it ;)

I've spoken to my friend and he's fine with our using it.  In fact he's thinking of migrating to a less expensive machine so has asked if I can help with that too.  So if I can save him a few quid and get us onto a server than everyone's happy.

As with all this stuff, we're very much in your capable hands.

I think sticking to the low cost options, provided they are relyable but don't involve you in enormous amounts of work, would be the best bet.  I'm also very much in favour of having nothing to do with Sky.

So, if I've understood things correctly temporally borrowing your mates server while yours is migrated would get my vote.

I would definitely go for plusnet. I have been with them for years and find them great. The staff in Sheffield are actually interested in what they do and will happily talk tech on the phone rather than read from a crib card with strong Indian accents.

My exchange gets fibre to the pole (100+ meg here we come) at the end of this month at which point I will be upgrading my current unlimited ADSL package with plusnet to fibre with them.

I have line rental, anytime calls and unlimited broadband, all with them. I also save £2 per month in referrals as my parents, sister in law and a friend are all on it.
