Something on twin tanking and veg running
« on: April 19, 2013, 06:11:51 AM »
last weekend i did 1100 miles in 3 days, nothing new there i hear you say, but a situation occured what i had never thought about till this time and something you single tank users and bio runners must panick about now and again and general car users across the board, when i was driving up the motorway while doing some serious miles my veg tank fuel had nearly ran out (doing 70mph) on the motorway (wasnt even showing fuel on gauge) any fuel, i had no junctions or services to pull into to do a fill up, then it crossed my mind! usually at this piont we all panick but not me, i kept driving quite happy, waiting for that splutter when the car dies and you run out of fuel, but not me, all i had to do was turn off the twin tank, and all systems default to diesel as you are driving along

hmm nice feeling - keep on trucking  ;D

twin tank is a backup tank

In my life, ive run out of fuel 3x -

Once with my '54 morris minor, when i was 17.  I ran out just as i pulled into the petrol station.  I put my foot on the clutch and coasted to the pump!

Twice in my landrover 101.  The fuel gauge is faulty.  On both occasions i just went round to the back, grabbed another jerry can, and tipped it in the tank.

Saying this, ill probably run out tomorrow, but, really, it isnt too hard to make sure you dont : )

I've never run out.  Had more than my fair share of filters blocking though, so I can appreciate the feeling...

I have fuel paranoia - on long journeys I always take more fuel with me in 25l drums than I think I'm likely to need.

But you will have the same problem when the second tank nears empty?

I've run out three times in my merc, all due to the dam saddle tanks.
Skoda Yeti L&K 2L TDI 150 CR DPF Adblue, running pimp diesel.
VW Golf SV 1.4 TSI DSG.

Ran out absolutely miles from anywhere a while back, no mobile reception - deep secluded valley - and nearest fuel 25 miles, nearest mob signal 15. Managed to blag 4 litres of cooking oil from 2 nearish dwellings which saw me through. It was getting dark, hardly any traffic, all a bit scary if hadn't been able to get going. The women looked at me as if I was a bit mental, asking for cooking oil to see me on my way to the nearest town.
