computer question
i have a netbook running win 7. i want to put a ssd in it. i have not got the win 7 disc and the copy i have says it is not genuine so i can't download the iso to a usb stick. i probably rather foolishly paid a fiver for a product key off ebay. i tried it on the microsoft site but says it is a OEM version. same with the one on the machine. any know how to do this? none of the alternative download sites seem to work either. copied from vod

Might be worth a go?

https://softlay.net/operating-system/windows-7-all-in-one-iso-free-download-32-64-bit.html

You should still be able to use your £5 key to activate it.  The keys are typically from equipment that has been scrapped - really the seller should send you the sticker and the scrapped part to comply with eBay's rules but rarely they do.

If you find the key doesn't work, call Microsoft's activation help line and explain you've changed the motherboard or something, they've either allowed the key or given me a new one to use in that case.

i did see one for 49p but thought the 5 pound one may work better for some naive reason. :)

Ah yes, price vs quality vs value :)

https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2012/10/121022121908.htm

good article. i work on the principle that if i ain't broke dont fix it. the trouble with computers is i am always a bit behind  the curve with software. my present problem is i  found a piece of software to do what i want, but the hardware is bit too old for it to work as intended, again >:( rather than try to bugger up my netbook trying to get it too work i think getting a more modern desk top machine will be easier and cheaper. anyone got a cheap desktop with a 3 gig processor going cheap. got a monitor and keyboard ect. they seem to be around 50 quid on ebay. less would be better :)

what kind of spec are you looking at ?

- mostly which cpu and how much ram ?

guessing at £50 you're looking at a core2duo.... you'd be better spending a bit more and getting something with an i5

on a bye it now you're looking at £100 is, but if you keep an eye out on auctions you could get one for not much more than £50

keep a lookout for dell optiplex systems - they'll almost all be ex company machines that have been replaced - they'll have decent components inside from dell (not cheap crap ram etc.)

this is spec for the netbook.

https://www.cnet.com/products/acer-aspire-one-522-c5dkk-10-1-c-50-windows-7-starter-1-gb-ram-250-gb-hdd-series/specs/

it is fine for most things, but having moved to the 20th century from my yurt i now have a reliable source of power from the grid. this means i can use a desktop machine without worrying about power so much, apart from gales and lightning. anything a bit faster will do. the program i am having trouble with is a video capture program called bandicam. there is a free trial version if anyone wants to try it on an oldish desktop machine and check if it works at full res.

I used that at work after I couldn't find anything to convert CCTV footage to a different format
(played it on screen with built in player and recorded screen)

the required spec is pretty low https://www.bandicam.com/support/

the thing with netbooks for things like this is they're designed to be super low power, so are slower than a desktop which 'looks' to be the same spec

if you're not doing much (just the stuff you used to do on netbook), a £50 recon machine on ebay will be more than enough for what you need
