Not seen that before.

Seems strange not to refill with acid unless the Alum makes an acid I'll ask my chemistry savvy mate tonight.

I have some old batteries in the garage and some sulfuric in the bio shed, so might give it a go.

I fancy giving that a go, as you say Julian, it seems strange that the battery isn't refilled with acid.

I wonder what the 2nd life expectancy is.

So he added a baking soda solution first, would that have desulferated the plates ?

So, chemistry expert wasn't too much help we had to Google Alum bet the consensus after two pubs (normal quiz has been permanently cancelled and we're trying to find a good alternative) and many beers, was that any electrolyte would probably work, but not as a well as sulfuric.

I'll still have a play when I have a moment.

On a similar note, the twin battery set up on the Disco (mentioned a while back) is working well with no obvious drawbacks.
