Inventor of the laser dies

BBC homepage main article is "Apple profit 'biggest in history'", meanwhile the inventor of the laser slips away unmentioned.  All a bit sad really.

Many of the worlds gratest inventors phisicists and engineers get little long term credit indeed most dont seek it.
Everyone knows Who Steve Jobs was yet all he did was pakage other peoples ideas.  But who knows about Tommy Flowers without whom it can be said
Alan Turing  Jobbs and Mr Microsoft and IBM would be stacking shelves at Tescos

Absolutely,  Tommy Flowers the man that invented the computer and in his own time at that.

How many have heard of him.

Another unsung hero and genius was Robert Hook.

What pisses me off even more is that all apple products (yes you read it right all) are a triumph of marketing wank over design function and engineering. What I also dislike is the condescending manner of the whole company, went in to get my iphone looked at as the battery is buggered and I was advised to book an appointment at the "genius bar" to speak to an apple Genius!

Brunel was a genius, Tesla was a Genius, whittle was a genius, don't give your selves airs and graces while peddling out substandard parts in (iphone 5 with dodgy battery) ill designed (can't change battery as its all sealed) and poorly executed products, twats that work in shops and treat customers like idiots should have thier own products shoved down thier fucking gobs.

Steve Jobs? He was a visionary.... What is the sum of what he contributed to collective knowledge and the advancement of the human race?? Two thirds of 3 fifths of fuck all. I wasn't upset he died, we are none of us immortal.

I spend so much time trying to cure my family of advertising bullshit, but educating them against the brainwashing machine is an uphill battle.

Any way rant over, its all your faults for gettng me started on apple.  ;D
Tomorrow its main political parties!!

Dyson is another.  Giving the impression he invented cyclone separation when it's been around for many years.  Similarly their hand dryers ... I worked for a company 30 years ago who produced air knives (he renames them "blades")  and puts over it was his idea.

The products are un-ergonomic, poorly constructed and I'm sure the hand dryers are sufficiently noisy as to damage your hearing, the only thing the company is any good at is marketing.

Quite.  Their air blade drier scoops the water to the bottom where it runs down the sides of the machine to drip on the floor.  On the continent they have similar machines (non-Dyson) that collect the water into a drained tank or evaporator tray.

As you say, "air knives" have been around for donkeys years, we used them to keep the smoke off optics in diesel emissions testers.
