Last month we got 150,000 hits, but only 1,840 visitors (a few of which were bots trawling the site).

But every single month the figures increase - it's definitely getting more popular.

At the moment it's using about 1.3Gb/month traffic-wise.  If this gets up to about 50Gb/month then we'd have to think about actually paying for professional hosting.  We're a long way off that though and I can't see it expanding that quickly - we're bit of a "special interests" group :)  (Oh yes, bit special sir!)

Always been a bit confused about website stats ... I thought a "hit" was just a request for information and it may take many "hits" to load one page i.e. each photo, text, frame or what ever.  I've always taken page views along with visitors to be a more meaningful statistics.

Would be grateful for clarification if anyone knows for sure!

Hits are a bit meaningless because multiple hits are required for one page (as you point out, images, bits of footer, template files... a lot).

Page views are definitely more useful, as is unique visitors (number of people that visit the site).
