Good video as you say ... I didn't realise early cars only drove one wheel.

When the kids were young, I built them a go kart (of course grownup's could fit in it too, well, you have to don't you) and that only drove one rear wheel.  It would fly round left hand corners and crawl round right and ones ... really weired until you got used to it!

Very good way of explaining it. Shame they don't seem to show things like that to trainee mechanics any more. The basic principles stay the same, no  matter how old they get.

I remember being taught the principles of differentials as part of my C & G qualifications in MVCS. Sun, planet and annulus gears are also used in Automatic gearboxes. That said...the video is really good at getting right down to the nitty gritty.

Good find Tony.

i built a petrol gokart as a test to learn myself arc welding for my lad when he was 6, it had a honda 90 stepper engine and cortina steering wheel and a coach seat, i had it chauin driven to a dummy shaft them fanbelt drive to one back wheel, i had to gear it down as it went l;ike stink, i got it down to 30mph (i drove by mates car on the road to get the top speed :) ) i had to make rack and pinion steering with bushes, yes quite a learning curve for me, but payed off, we had 8 kids on that going across the field hehehe, had it 4 years then it got stolen, never saw it again, me boy was gutted, my lad has the pics so cant show you it...

I built a go cart out of some pram wheels, and a few planks of wood. The lane from the farm is steep with lots of bends, so I would listen for cars coming, and if all was quiet, I start rolling down the hill.
Not being particularly old,(nor very bright), I thought a large lump of metal tied to the back would work well as a brake. It didn't. The first time I used it, it about took my head off.

So I abandoned the brake idea, and just relied on listening for cars. Needless to say, I failed to hear one, and met it, full flight, mid corner. Turn sharp right, hit ditch, and go crashing through the scenery, with the go cart flying merrily after me. Frightened the living daylights out of the car driver. That was the end of my go carting days.
