Maybe softwood is ok if it is absolutely snuff dry. I'm pretty sure I have used some blended with hardwood before. It always seemed to work well ie <20ppm soap.

I wouldn't use any softwood chippings, it's too resinous which will affect your bio.

Have you looked for woodworkers that make bespoke oak furniture etc? I got mine from a tiny place not far away, huge bag for a few quid.

Don't know for sure, but my guess would be that soft wood is avoided in case bio dissolves and retains any resin present.
