Were you intending to have this page as part of the wiki, Tony?
-
Yes, just so it isn't just me responsible for maintaining it. It shouldn't be in any category though. Unless there are any objections :)
-
Good idea that others can edit it, especially as it saves you the onerous job. But other than manual policing, there's nothing to stop commercial outfits adding thenselves over time.
I certainly don't think it should appear on the wiki, so agree it mustant be indexed. We could link to it with a sticky from the "Oil collection and sourcing" section.
-
Feel free to call me stupid if I am being so but how do we find the page if it isn't in any category?
-
That's why I suggested putting it in a sticky thread on the forum.
-
So where is this page ?
I'm getting my web site redone next week so it would be nice to read this first.
-
On the wiki main page ... editors tool bar on the left hand side ... Recent changes.
If you click that you can see ... well, unsurprisingly all the recent changes to the wiki, along with what a hash K.H is making of new pages!

Me too. You'll note only two minor edits after loading the page!

Better make that three then
four or 5 GPD,surely 4 or 5 or four or five?
S,ok i will stop making pages now then, cant have my edits filling up the wiki :)
-
OK, OK I'll change it ... but it's actually GBP!

Do it all off wiki, much easier!

I dunno who owns these sites but they no longer show
East London,
Kent,
Newport
Fraserburgh, Peterhead & Banff areas
and the 2nd Wolverhampton link is very slow to load and might time out on some slower connections.
-
Aren't there free link checkers that can take the hard work out of doing this.
If the site isn't being maintained I'd suggest we delete it.
Thinking out loud we need someone really good at coding to write a little programme to check the links periodically, then email the owner if there's a problem. Two emails in a row and they're out ... now, who do we know who could do that?
-
there are link checkers you can download but I've never needed to check more than a few dozen links once in a blue moon so it's quicker to do it manually than learn the program I find
lets keep the page, I don't mind checking it now and then, it's well handy for anyone settinfg up a new page.
we can try and find out who owns those few sites and ifn they don't fix em in a reasonable time then delete them
-
Sounds like project, I'll add it to my massive backlist of projects :) At the back!
Since most people don't know (or care) about how to make webpages for collections, we really need a system like oilcollect had. Although that was manually administered - it would be nice to have one that tied into, say, login details here. But as with all these things it takes more time (and to some extent motivation) than I have.
-
ah you posted whilst I was editing my last page
-
We did install this mediawiki extension to check dead links, not sure we got along with it OK though!

"We" had forgotton about that!

Surely all the sites will have an email associated, can we list the two to make contacting people easy? I'm happy to wade through and extract email from existing sites. Can we arrange for anyone adding sites on the wiki page to also list their email?
-
http://www.biopowered.co.uk/wiki/Special:BrokenLinks
shows several but none from personal collections, hmmmm

good call

That might be because we put "pre" tags around the code to stop the wiki parsing it as HTML. I guess we can't have it both ways.

The Email addy on my site is no good as I can't log into it (and never have been able to),
this is one of the reasons I'm having it redone, that and the fact it doesn't show up on searches so the Email problem is immaterial.
I must say that at present I have a surplus of oil as I've picked up a few new collections and a contact that brings oil to me,
but these things never last for me.
-
I agree Mark, I'm collecting more than I use at the moment, but rather than sell the excess I'm storing it for leaner times.
-
lucky devils, I've never been so bad with oil stocks, that is why I thought I'd try a collection site, I'm gonna get some cards done too and poke em through a few doors.
Mark, why don't you use a hotmail or googlemail eddress? mind you ifn you cannot login then maybe you cannot add it to the contact page
-
If you run really low Chug I will help you out pm me
-
im looking for 1 LTR petrol with cheap tax and insurance and fueling costs 8)
-
If you run really low Chug I will help you out pm me
OK cheers, I'm ok for the next few batches but unless I find some new suppliers soon I may take you up on that offer in a month or two geez.
-
I've found out whose the Fraserburgh, Peterhead & Banff areas site is and sent a message about wrong/dead link
-
Chug you have a PM.
-

I have a new Email address, but can't get it swapped onto my site.
Hopefully it'll be all done next week.

I've just been updating my website and in the process have manually checked all the personal website links (after spending 20 mins finding the page) and deleted the 20 ish that no longer work.
Trouble is, since the migration, every time I leave a page, I get logged out and can't edit the page.
Then when I log in, it automatically takes me to the forum so I click wiki and i get logged out again!
On the grounds that it's driving me mad, I've pasted the HTML below in the hope that someone more patient/intelligent/lucky than me will be able to stay logged on long enough to alter the page.

I have similar issues ... if I log on to the forum, I'm not logged on to the wiki. If I log in to the wiki I get redirected to the forum and when I click the link for the wiki I'm logged out. I think that's got a lot to do with the unusual browser I use (although it's supposed to be based on Chrome)
If I log in to the the wiki with Fire Fox I can stay logged in and visit various pages without being kicked out.
-
How do you login to the wiki Julian?
I also tried to find the personal collection websites page but cannot do either?
I'm using firefox
-
It used to be that logging on to either the wiki or the forum would allow you to stay logged on to both platforms.
Now you can log on to the forum but when you click the link for the wiki you go to that page but you are logged out. Similarly logging on whilst in the wiki takes you to the forum and when you click a link to go back to the wiki, you're logged out again.
I don't have a clue how to fix it.
-
This was the page .... http://www.biopowered.co.uk/wiki/Personal_Collection_Websites (http://www.biopowered.co.uk/wiki/Personal_Collection_Websites) ... but we can't edit it.
-
This is most strange. I managed to get logged into the wiki, but I had to do it in firefox via a search and go direct to the wiki and use the log in panel that's in the middle of the page. Now I appear to be permanently logged in.
I can go to wiki pages and click edit, but when I try and save a page I get the message ...
Sorry! We could not process your edit due to a loss of session data. Please try again. If it still does not work, try logging out and logging back in.
I can't see an option to log out of the wiki and if I use any of the menu buttons I appear to be logged out, but if I close the window, search biopowered and go to the wiki again I'm still logged in.
I previously thought the main page looked different, but couldn't work out how ... now I realise that the left hand tool bar that contained all the links to "Special pages", "Recent changes", "Upload files" etc. is missing.
Although we can view the wiki we don't appear to be able to do any more than that.
-
Just tried again using Chrome and same old same old for me, just throws me back to forum.
I did notice that just above to the left of the sign in, the link info said
'Biopowered - vegetable oil and biodiesel forum » Login'
so maybe the login button is just linking to the wrong thing?
Even if that is the case, how do we fix it if we can't log in?
I think the Wiki is stuck in status quo and may eventually be defunct unless we can find someone who properly knows what they're doing?
-
thanks for trying to sort this guys , i was hoping to add my new website so i will be following this hoping it gets resolved .

with my limited knowledge it looks like a permission thing eg it says you must be a member of the users group to be granted edit access to edit, is there anyone who are members of the admin group on the site able to edit or check the permissions of the user group etc
just a thought.
-
Two or three admin have tried with no success.
There's something that links the login of the wiki to the forum and that appears to have been lost in the hosting change.
-
Don't know how but managed to get onto the Wiki and it said I was signed in but when I tried to edit the page it said ....
Sorry! We could not process your edit due to a loss of session data. Please try again. If it still does not work, try logging out and logging back in.
Of course, as soon as I logged out I couldn't get back in!
-
I think the trick is to go direct to the wiki without visiting the forum, but it's a bit futile as it won't let you save an edited page.
-
DoH ! just my luck
-
I would really like to take a look at this but having just moved house the only internet I've got is at work, or my mobile. That and scant time, since it's something of a project house and I seem to be spending my spare time filling skips with the junk the last owners left!
If I remember rightly, the authentication "bridge" with the forum was done with this extension:
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:SMF/Users_Integration
(If someone takes a look at the forum's LocalSettings.php file, if it matches what's described on that page then that's it).
As a first step, has everyone tried clearing their cache and cookies on their browsers? Because the cookies may retain some identification against the old host which won't work on the new one.

The move sounds like hard work ... so long as there's a nice big shed at the end of it which you can fill with your own junk, I'm sure it will be worthwhile!
I tried clearing the cache and cookies, but it made no difference.
I managed to view the LocalSettings.php file and found the lines ...
# This requires a user be logged into the wiki to make changes.
$wgGroupPermissions['*']['edit'] = false; // MediaWiki Setting
Which appears at the top of the code you linked to, but after that it appears to my incompetent eye to be different.
Looking at things logically, if it worked before, it should work now. The only differences between the old and new server are what ever stopped it working in the first place and the changes Mark made. I think what Mark did, possibly amongst other things, was to add a redirect. So could the code linking the wiki and forum be looking in the wrong place for the wiki?
-
Can someone PM me the login details? and I'll climb in and have a look.
-
Just sent them.
-
thanks but they're not working for me.
-
You should be able to access the control panel with just the URL, UN and PW ... (first three lines of the PM).
In control panel there's a "File manager" which will allow you to view/edit files on the site.
If you want to use an FTP program, you have to unlock the FTP access via the control panel before it will accept any FTP login.
-
Just checked it using the details in the PM and it work fine for me ... the security letters can be a little tricky to read though.
-
I was copying and pasting but I got in after the third attempt when tying again.
We seem to have the correct bits in local settings, so I'm now reading through SMF and wiki help pages
-
if anyone gets chance can they add my site please its
www.wasteoilbewdley.co.uk thanks

Nice site, but you may want to link to all the other oil collection sites ... that way others will be willing to link back to you.
Most people use a "Collections in other areas" tag or similar.
If and when we get the problems with the wiki sorted, you'll be able to add your site to the list.
-
thanks will do keep me posted

In case you didn't know Julian, there are about a dozen links that no longer work on the 'other collection areas' on your site.
-
12, wow I hadn't checked for a while! I'll have to remove them.
I'm surprised that people don't keep their sites going, mine brings in a slow trickle of new collection which is always useful.
