Title: Expected downtime
Post by: Tony on February 20, 2013, 03:03:01 PM
On the 25th Feb my ISP will be doing some work on their network core.

This will give 1-2 hours of downtime in the afternoon/evening.

We're also getting a replacement static IP address (bit of a shock as we've had the old one for years), so sometime within 30 days of the 25th I will also need to reconfigure the router for the new IP, which will lead to additional downtime.

At the point of the new IP coming into action, we will need to update all of this domain's DNS A records to point to the new IP.  This will take a period of up to 24 hours for worldwide nameserver propagation, therefore the site may be unavailable for up to 24 hours when this takes place.

We may also need to get our reverse-DNS entry updated after the IP change for mail to work to all mailservers, so mail notification from the site may also be affected.  (Not everyone's e-mail, it's just that some picky mailservers like hotmail expect a valid reverse DNS entry in order to accept delivery of e-mail).

So in summary: down for a couple of hours on the 25th, then some time within 30 days after that the site may be inaccessible for up to 24 hours.  I'll post updates on VOD if necessary.

you could post up the new static ip as soon as you know it, and hard-core addicts could just use that, and bypass the dns?

Unfortunately that won't work for two reasons:

- it is set up as a virtual web server, so multiple domains are hosted on the same IP. The server hosts different files based on the domain given in the request - as it stands visiting the current IP as a website http://87.194.132.220/ won't help as the domain name is needed for this filtering process to work.

- the wiki and forum make heavy use of the domain name for internal referencing, which relies on your DNS being correct. This could be fixed to use to a particular IP rather than a domain, but then this won't work with the virtual server setup.

However, I think practically for most people it shouldn't take all 24 hours to be able to use the site again. :)

Doesn't seem to have happened today so I'm none-the-wiser when downtime will occur.

Interesting thing of note though, first time I've heard of a user being kicked off the network for excess bandwidth usage - he was shifting over a terrabyte (1000 gb) a month!

We're a way off that :)

OK, the initial downtime has now occurred.  We have a new static IP address to migrate everything across to:

46.65.127.50

Edit: migration to new IP completed

Should add that RDNS entries were not migrated with the static IP, I'm still waiting for the ISP to update the RDNS entry, until then notification e-mails may not get delivered to hotmail accounts and other strict mailservers.
