Hi shank
Yes you can arc stainless and iron , you need to use dissimilar rods and be carefully with the different melt temps.
As said above Jim is the realy guy for fine details on this
-
thx
dissimilar ???
wats dat
::)
-
It a rod for welding metals that arn't the same (dissimilar).
The weld will take on the characteristic of the ferrous metal.
Hope this helps till you get better advice

From what I understand (I'm not a welder) cast iron can be welded, but will often crack along the edge of the weld if put under any strain.
Dissimilar rods are for welding two dissimilar metals, you need the right type depending on what metals they are.
-
hey mark
its not cast
just iron or steel, one of um? how do i tell???

Now Now boy's play nicely, anyway back to the other rods, the welding ones.
You can weld stainless to mild steel using either stainless or standard steel rods BUT it's better to use stainless rods to prevent the stainless component rusting along the fusion line.

could i use the rothumbergur gas torch and solder?
-
i dont know what youre wanting to join (cant see the photo) but if its such a weak joint that you would consider solder, you might want to have a look at adhesives, as some of them can be very strong. if you have a large contact area may be able to create a bond stronger than what's sticking out.
i think one of the little lotus sports cars has its chassis glued together, rather than welded.

crossbow bolts i got a big vampire cull to sort :)
nar, there fishing rod rests...
-
i dont know what youre wanting to join, but id think its got to be easier to turn up a ring of steel and fasten it with a grub screw?
-
...or just glue it (silkaflex, or just aryldite etc). If its just a fishing rod, its not heavy. Or are you talking about the fins at the bottom?
-
You could silver solder/braze with the torch and MAPP gas but you would have to ask James if its suitable for the metals
-
When you say iron in the OP, do you mean mild steel? Mild steel and stainless steel will silver solder very well. In the past, I've used the same rod and flux as I use for copper.
-
yes maybe mild steel?
yes to botom fins i need to weld those fins on a stick this part gets pushed in the ground
-
Why do you need the fins ?
Is it to stop the buggers twisting ?
And what's this got to do with bio/veg ?
