I have a D2 air heater (also ex-bt van!)

It really does not like bio.  Unstable, smokey burn.  Really not worth using on it.
Ive never burnt dino on it, but its flawless on kerosene.  Nice stable clean burn.

The D4 unit is specified to run on bio, but the D2 isnt.  The design is basically the same, so im unsure why this is, but all i know is that, for sure, the D2 is no good on bio.

Steve - which unit have you had sucess with?  I have been tempted to sell my D2 and get a D4, but i did not want to bother unless i knew with certainty that it would be ok.

Its not that kerosene is expensive for the amount it uses, its just the inconvenience of having two tanks etc.

On the net, somewhere, there is a site that delves into the reasons why the D4 unit will run on bio ans the D2 wont. It is something to do with the area of the burn chanber, and the way the fuel is ignited. I stumbled across it once, but have no idea where to find it.

Another thing to think about when buying second hand erberspachers, is that they can get lockout, where if its been started so many times, without actually working, a safety feature cuts in, and they need to be reset by the manufacturer. I dunno is that info correct or not, just another thing I remember reading somewhere.

I'd love to have one fitted, I'd just run it on Dino from a fitted tank. there are so many vehicles they were fitted to, emergency serevice vehicles, utilitys vehicles. There must be loads in scrap yards, and most people wouldn't know what they are looking at.

And it needs the control panel, it doesnt look like its with that one.

Thats a scary looking piece of kit. i just googled it.
How does it plumb into the water jacket? Seems it heats the water through a heat exchanger.
Does it blast hot air out the back, or only down the exhaust pipe?
How much would one be wanting for it............?

Its just a vehicle heater, ive got two,one will be used in my camper, its like this one

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Eberspacher-BN4-heater-for-VW-camper-crewcab-splitty-westfalia-/261122875386?pt=UK_Campervan_Caravan_Accessories&hash=item3ccc22dffa&nma=true&si=Hri0%2BtlIBvGysJn3s7mhasfgbNo%3D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557

They have different air hoses one round one oblong, when i decide which outlet i will use i will sell the other.
The first one i had refurbished, the second i paid £100 for untested,i would be looking for my money back but i would want to make sure it works before selling

Ahhh, I thought it heated the water jacket. Great thing in a camper though.
Having starting problems now. Must get my act together.

I ran my D2 for a season on Bio without issue's, but when I came to run it the next year the rubber pipework had gone soggy and black goo got sucked into the heater. Now that did cause me grief, so on the basis I probably use about 15 litres of fuel a season in it I just run it on Dino now.

Ive got a B4 (no 'n') that looks a bit like this lurking somwhere -

...apart from mine is black for some reason.

I heard that that VW camper owners were keen on them for some reason (i mean the split or bay windows - not modern ones), so you might like to try pushing it to them?

I had another ages ago, that came with my landrover 101 (my 2nd unit came from someone else's 101) - i swapped it for the D2 when i swapped the V8 for a TDI, but, in hindsight, if i needed a separate tank for the D2, i may as well have stayed with the B4 : (

On the net, somewhere, there is a site that delves into the reasons why the D4 unit will run on bio ans the D2 wont. It is something to do with the area of the burn chanber, and the way the fuel is ignited. I stumbled across it once, but have no idea where to find it.

Ive heard that some get lock-out too, but my D2 certainly does not.  Theres different controllers for them also, so it may be to do with them also.
I spoke with a helpfull service agent once who went into, if i didnt want to use the controller, just wire a switch between x and y (etc) on the loom... but my controller was fine.

If you ever come across the website again that goes into the D2 / D4 bio issue, id be keen to read.  I will have a look for it myself now!

I like this bit near the bottom of one of the pages.

"Diesel engines & heaters that are not designed for biodiesel can suffer from filter clogging, coking and rubber seal damage.
Home made or roadside bio fuels are very different to EN 14214 spec oil."

Im sorry - i too did not come back to this post, so did not see your request.  Im away at the moment, but this should get you started -

http://www.eberspacher.com/support-and-downloads/technical-documents.html

eg -

http://www.eberspacher.com/downloads/technical-documents/airtronicD2+D4_technical.pdf

I think there are other bits about as well though, which is what i think i have stored on the computer at home.  As i recall, there are different documents that should all say the same thing, but some of them say slightly different things, hence saving them.

...but it was some time ago that i was dealing with this, so i may be wrong.

There's a good selection of documents on the link above though.
