hi all
i was lifting a 25 ltr carbouy out my boot and the handle ripped out and the whole top just shattered into bits, this had 25 ltrs of bio in it, so said 25 ltr ended up all over the road which was lucky as it could of dropped back in my boot after handle ripped out, but still splatted all over me car and road. all the plastic had gone brittle snapping into little bits and not bendy plastic, the drum wasnt that old either... oh well my loss. :o
heat damage or methanol damage, that is the question... ??? or am i just too dam fit 8)

Bet that was exciting. Very odd how it went brittle like that. Is that an ex carwash drum?
Thinking about it, I notice some of the carwash drums do seem a little more brittle than others. Maybe what they contain, combined with to much sunlight, some thing like that?
Never seen one do that though.
-
I was laughing over that pic earlier ;D
Sun damage is my bet, methanol and bio shouldnt affect a carboy
-
RM,i had forgotten i have Arash,s nice new drum here,if needed ;)
-
Could have been worse, you could have been getting car cleaning tips off Tony if it had been full of WVO.
-
Hehe you don't know your own strength Paul :)
-
You've worried me now Paul,
I have a 25L that I fill the cars with, I've been using the same one since I started vegging in late 2007,
and as I live in a mid teris I carry it through the house,
what would SWMBO say if I spilt 25L of bio on the hallway carpet.
-
I had one go like that., fortunately it was only partly full and didn't spill anything. I have been wary of them since.

was very odd, lifted many drums like this many times, the drum was of unknown origin, could of been ex car wash or pub dishwasher liquid? my guess is the same 2 fold, whatever was init and sun damage maybe...

oh yes forgot about that, he doesnt need it, :o need it on the trailer, trailer has tie eyes on the bed itself for fitting 2 times rachet straps criss / crossed with a peace of ply on the top, locks it doen nice...
although it may have a shed on it muhahahaaaaaa...

i have that happen. UV is my bet. i had some full of water in the field holding down tarps. that had been there a while though.
-
I'm a little worried about the UV angle as I store all my Meth now in 25l drums from the carwash, outside in the sun. Some are a year old and seen a lot of daylight, though show no signs of exploding (they expand up nicely in the sun on a hot day without bursting so I think they're still strong).
I think I'll build them a little shelter to keep them out of the sun having seen this.
Incidentally I have a 25l red drum I've used for four years for Meth mixing and that is still going strong, so I don't think it's the chemicals as such, must've been the UV exposure.
-
Its a strange thing, because theres 25 litre drums here that have been used for years to put red diesel in to fuel machines, and dont think ive ever seen one break. The take all sorts of abuse, being thrown around, and left in the sun, cold, whatever. Its like the diesel helps the plastic in the drum. Same with drum I always use for oil, it feels more supple now that a new one.

i have 200 litres sitting in the middle of the field in 25 lre drums. they are covered with a tarp so hopefully should be ok. the ones that broke on me where the thin ktc cubies, not the usual 25 ltr ones. think it might be that they are translucent rather than coloured.the dye might prevent uv cracking.

Have you checked that they are still there after having a bunch of bio brewers camping in the same field ?
-
I think I'm going to build a storage shelter for my drums next week, the neighbours will have less to complain about the state of the garden that way too. Getting some new neighbours next door soon, won't be long before they spot the brewing habit I'm sure... hope they are as cool about it as the ones moving out.

given the amount of tat you lot seem to like carting about the country i know none of you had enough room for 200 ltrs of meth. :D better check some bugger hasn't swapped it for water.

"I seem to be having some trouble getting this batch to convert, and the 3/27 sample just floats on top of the Methanol" ;D
