Hi anyone who's still around lol
Getting totally fed up with my 2004 Skoda Octavia using engine oil. Going through around 300ml every 120 miles (sometimes less). It's smoky on start up too which is never good for anyone around. Drives well though, no noticeable loss of power.
Just wondered if anyone knows of anything I could look for or test I could do to determine the issue? What would a compression test tell me, leaky rings?
Worth running steam into the intake?

What engine is in it? How smokey is it on start up?
If you take the oil filler cap off when it's running is it blowing out a lot like the crankcase pressure is higher than it would normally be?

Compression test could give you a false positive. Lack of compression could be a valve seat issue as well as rings. Having said that, it will confirm an issue.

Really depends where the oil is going - could be a turbo seal, worn valve stems, gasket, piston rings... Does it smoke badly if left at idle for a bit and then revved? This might indicate a turbo seal.
A good steaming or water injection wouldn't do any harm if the rings are getting gummed, that's for sure.

Smokes like a goodun, could be the veg oil though.
It does blow out of the filler cap when it's off, but I really don't know what's normal

Turbo was changed a few years back and it did the same before and after the replacement turbo. Could obviously have been a faulty replacement turbo though.......

As Tony has said, does it smoke more if left to idol for a while, this could indicate turbo or valve steam seals.
A compression test will show a lot, if it's low (do this one cylinder at a time)add 10ml of oil into a cylinder and test again, this will seal around the rings and show if it's rings or valve that's causing the loss of compression, yes it'll smoke when you do start it later, but it's doing that anyway.

Just an update. Sadly 2 glow plugs are pretty stuck and I can't risk them snapping. So no compression test :(
Done a water injection for an hour and will keep doing that (gonna install a permanent setup). Also used BG 109E engine flush to see if that can help clogged rings (hoping it's that) which has very good reviews. So will report back on that one

new update.
All was going pretty well. The BG product was helping, oil usage nearly halved. Then the bad news, my turbo blew. I blame no one but myself as I was having an over boost problem for months (known sticky vanes on the turbo) and I never found time to deal with it, so it bit me lol Replacement turbo on and it's running again.
I wondered what I could do with sticky VNT vanes though and if using water injection would help at all getting to the turbo?

I've always thought water injection should be after the turbo as you don't really want droplets of water hitting the turbo that's spinning at very high revs.
Wasn't there a trick with mr muscle to help sticking vanes?
I'm sure it'll be on briskoda if there is.

water injection is before the inlet. I've got a proper set up that I want to fit....
Yeah I've seen posts about Mr Muscle but also seen posts where people said it ruined seals...................
