Rossey off VOD asked me to do a little test for him so he could put the results on his facebook page.
It has always been accepted that mixing WVO with a small amount of petrol encourages water and other contaminates to drop as a residue.
I tested some poor WVO, it originally had whites in it but after 3 weeks of settling some reasonable oil appeared on the top. Water in this oil was 1425ppm.
I took 200mls of this oil and in a 250ml separating funnel I added 20mls of petrol and gave it a good shake.
Within 2 hours some residue appeared at the bottom (looked like whites) I left the contents to settle for 30 hours, then tested again for water, it was 345ppm.
So that was 1425ppm down to 345ppm just by adding 10% petrol and 30 hours settling.

thats some going.
i`m finally, after 9 years able to settle my oil and its made one hell of a difference.
passes straight through both filters.

Impressive. Out of interest how does that compare with a glyc wash?

I've tested ex glyc washed oil a few times, it's generally been between 350 and 450 ppm. Shame we can't use this method before processing into bio but I'm sure that wouldn't be a good idea with petrol in the mix.

i have wondered about this. if it is settled for long enough would the volatile elements evaporate. after all methanol is pretty volatile as well. not as much a petrol i know. i have thought of experimenting but chickened out as i want to keep my hair and beard.

had a call from a chef yesterday, his KP has spilled a bucket of water into the fryer as he went to clean it out.
so i asked him to put the oil in the cubbie it came in.
i have 2 x 10L clear tubs here, so i`ll split it, add petrol to one and take some pics over a few weeks, see what happens.
i collect it in 2 weeks with the rest.

collected the wet oil and split it between two tubs.
tub with label has 1L of misfuel (mostly RUG)
will take again in a week.
