Title: Sourcing a connector
Post by: Julian on September 13, 2015, 09:27:47 PM
I'm trying to locate a cheap source of these in the UK.  I can find them in China if I want to buy 500 on an FOB basis.

I only want around 10 off with circa 150mm x 1 - 1.5mm² tails.

Is there a generic name for them and besides trailers in the USA, where are they used?

I thought I've seen them on RC models but searches don't seem to bring them up.

Appreciate any help.

They are nearly the same as I used on r/c cars. They are called bullet connectors.

I guess these are a bit pricey, if you want 10?

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MOTOROLA-DM3400-GM340-GM350-GM900-DC-POWER-CONNECTOR-PLUG-LEAD-DOUBLE-BULLET-/351487273035?hash=item51d646284b

Other wise, just put "Bullet connectors" into Ebay. Single ones, male and female, are pence.

I've been searching bullet connectors, but didn't find that ad, GM ... good find not too bad a price.

Same bloke does 10 for 18 quid ...

Always wonder where he buys them from though.

May buy one to see if it fits my application first.

What about deans connectors? used in RC and can handle high currents.

They are coming in at £1.80 each complete with tail, which isn't too bad for what I had in mind.  Would be nice if they can be had cheaper, though.

The look like good connectors, but the problem is I need to supply this type to match up with connectors already on existing machines.

Sorry, but all the wrong type!

I've seen them described as Hopkins connectors in the States, but I think that's just a trade name rather than a generic one.

Looks like what you are looking for is called an SAE 2 way flat moulded trailer connector. Doesn't seem as though they are cheap.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2047675.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC0.H0.TRS0&_nkw=SAE+2-Way+Flat+Molded+Trailer+Connector&_sacat=0

Just realised you have got them cheaper than that anyhow. I guess they are expensive because they are made up to a certain spec. Should be cheaper ones about, maybe not with the SAE mark on them. Doesn't look like they are on Ebay though.

Yes, done searches on SAE and "flat bullet" connector.  SAE is just a US standard, so may not be the actual type name.

Anyhow, I've ordered one of the £2.65 ones from "knickerlessparsons" (a trading name that fills one with confidence) on ebay that you flagged up.  If that fits, the bulk buy of 10 @ £18.00 will do fine.

Many thank for all the suggestions.

Ha ha, that's precisely what I thought. Probably seemed like a good idea when they made the account.

I'm sure you're all bursting with curiosity to find out if the plug fitted (Yeah, right ... but I'll tell you anyway)

Fits a treat, wire size is right but the bally colours are round the wrong way!

I could probably get round it with judicious use of shrink wrap however, has anybody tried dying/painting pvc wire?  What about upholstery paint you used to get for vinyl car seats?

If I could make them both black that would do.

the seller might have them with the colours the other way around ?

the male of one connector plugs into the female of the other connector.... so you'd need different wire colours for each pair of connectors otherwise the wire colours would swap ?

They must be handed. A matching pair will have male and female opposite colours to its butty.

I know I may look pretty daft, but I've already asked the question ... he only sells that orientation to match up with Motorola equipment.

you can buy reels of heat shrink....  you could cut it to the right length and do a bunch all at once ?

hot air gun / paint stripper thingie work great for heating/shrinking it

Maybe it would be easier to change the existing connector to something else like standard bullets?

If I can only buy connectors in this orientation, then using two the same will still result in the colours being mismatched!

The idea would be to supply a battery c/w connector for people to fit to an existing machine, so I've no control over the other connector.

I meant just snip off the connectors you have and replace with standard bullet connectors.

Ah, sorry, got you!

Good suggestion but not possible for logistic reasons I'm afraid!
