Title: long time since i was in newark
Post by: GedsJeep on July 16, 2015, 12:08:56 AM
twas at RAF Swinderby to be exact...

so, having decided that watching a few thousand pounds sit in a field doing nothing wasnt for me, ive decided to sell my caravan....

and go back to a tent...

all be it a rather expensive tent......

http://www.kampa.co.uk/air/hayling-6-air

so, we are thinking about staying here for a midweek break .

http://www.kelhamhall.co.uk/

anyone live near can offer any advice/must see?

two adults, a dog and two kids  (15/9)...

Cheers!

So the frame is inflatable tubes?  Fancy!

We have this, retro camping

Takes a while to put up, but would stand most weather.  I think we paid £70 odd for it second hand.

Cheers!

That is a mighty nice looking tent. Like the blow up idea. Hope it doesn't catch on, coz I love watching people trying to put the poles in big tents, when it windy and raining, and the kids are strangling each other......

I noticed the last time I did much site camping, that big tents were the style, even for singles, or a couple. I can see why too. Prices have come down, quality has improved, and there is no doubt a bigger tent and a nice bed has a great appeal.
If I ever get back into it, I'll be going for a big 'un. My 15 year old 2 man has seen too many nights, and my 1 man is great on a back pack, but there is not much comfort with it.

What would really turn me on though is a tent that you can reverse a 4wd into, (Plus the 4wd) Have the cooker and kit mounted in the back of the truck.

If you ever get back to it let me know.  I might be looking to part with a six berth frame tent the size of a small garage!  And yes I've driven a car into the porch bit to work on it in the rain!

This is it but a different colour.  The "gable wall" is movable from its current position to the front   ...

Nice looking tent Julian, is that another Cabanon?

That does look like a nice size, and plenty of light going into it.  Good hight too. I'll bear you in mind if I ever get into the market for one.

i`ve been camping and caravanning for 42 years now, so ive been there, hung on to the tents in storms and looked for the crumpled tshirts.

that tent is my idea of going back to basics.

in the current run, we had a Cabanon frame tent ala tonys, then moved onto a conway tardis..

(http://i754.photobucket.com/albums/xx184/gedsjeep/IMAG0350.jpg) (http://s754.photobucket.com/user/gedsjeep/media/IMAG0350.jpg.html)

but it still had poles and awnings to put up...

so i bought one of these....

(http://i754.photobucket.com/albums/xx184/gedsjeep/IMAG0577_zps76e42511.jpg) (http://s754.photobucket.com/user/gedsjeep/media/IMAG0577_zps76e42511.jpg.html)

exact model and spec.

the first few years we used it pretty often, so it was a case of top up fluids and food and off we go, but it hasnt been moved since sept last year.

ever concious of £20 notes turning to soggy cardboard, i sold it yesterday.

i lost £500 in three years, so im happy with that.

the tent, vestibule, footprint and carpet cost £820. about £450 more than the pole version, but well worth it for ease of use.

they reckon 17 mins to put up a 7 metre long tent.

i just cant be arsed with poles and crap anymore, and when not in use, it can live in the bottom of my wardrobe away from the meeces and the rain......

No, it's an Easycamp Kos 6.  Discontinued now but a great tent for family camping ... eight of us (two families) used to cook and eat round a table inside still with room for a few inflatable arm chairs!

You try lifting it and the poles up onto the Disco roof rack though.

This is my blow up poly cotton tent, lovely but expensive and I had to build a teardrop trailer to put all the gear in!

went and tried it today (without vestibule extension)

took 30 mins to put up, from arriving and sitting down to read instructions to sitting down for a drink.

same to put away and went back into bag.

inflatable poles are like steel at 7psi!

I bet that is strong in a storm. No poles to snap, or push up through the material. Ideal solution for a big tent like that.

That tent looks great!  Presumably based on kite surf LEI tubes?
Title: Re: long time since i was in newark
Post by: GedsJeep on July 19, 2015, 12:47:22 AM
it was quite breezy when we put it up, but i only put the front three  and rear one guide ropes up, as we were just testing it.

you can see on this vid that in true blue peter style i made earlier.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eWaAoBI2o6s

the tubes are encased within tubes, and encased in zipped tunnels to keep the pressure in, so you cant pop one accidentally.

you get a pump with different nozzles for your airbeds and stuff as well as the tent, some seam sealant (just in case) and spare guys, loads of HD plastic pegs and an oversized bag.

Really pleased you all had a good time. Nice photographs.
21 years ago I was camping in west Scotland solo on my Honda 750. I heard a plane but couldn't see it. Next thing it overtook me from below. It was a Tornado flying through a loch below me. Awesome sight seing it from above.
Fingers crossed for the weather. We camping in Robin Hoods Bay in 10 days time. Kids love camping, I recon it's the freedom they have.

that tour of the RAF bases takes me back to my days as a roady for a Dj show in the mid 70's  went to all those bases plus the yank ones as well. the strangest one was RAF upware. there never seemed to anyone there till we had set up then people would appear. then disappear again. most of the bases had some activity but upware never seemed to.

Tents! Commoners and riffraff use tents...
One just applies ones handbrake and one is sorted.
