Biopowered - vegetable oil and biodiesel forum

I have been working on a page called 'Vegetable oil as fuel' which I intended to be the veg equivalent to the page 'Biodiesel' and published the first incomplete draft at the end of December. I have continued tinkering and have been writing the 'Suitability of engines and fuel systems' section off line when I get spare time with the intention of publishing it when complete.
I noticed tonight that on 10 January Tony has updated the 'Biofuels an overview' page to include almost identical info to what I have been writing in my 'suitability of engines and fuel systems' section.
Problem is that while there's little point in having almost identical info repeated twice, it makes perfect sense for it to be on both pages.
Also a lesson to be learnt by us all regarding letting everyone know what we're working on!

Err yes sounds like it! Sorry about that chap.

I edited the overview page because I figured that for the casual browser, it would be one of the first pages read (especially since it is listed high up on the wiki main page). As it stood, it dived straight into the technical details, and mostly about fuel alternatives we can't use in this country anyway.
Could you post up your page here on the forum, if there are any areas that have been missed in the wiki, or points where we differ, than this would be a good place to iron those out. It might be that yours is better presented or flows better.
The work on the overview page is a first pass, I'm sure there are bits some people will disagree with :)

"Great minds" as they say. It's as much my fault as it is yours but it would be good if we had a way of preventing it in the future.
I've published what I've done so far so we can get a direct comparison.
As a common landing page, I would think the reader would want no more than a general idea of what biofuels are all about from the 'Biofuels an overview' page and then more detailed information about twin tanks and suitable engines etc from the relevant sections.
I'm of the opinion that the 'Biofuels an overview' page should be far more general than it is, maybe even stripped down to just a couple of sections outlining a general description of the two main fuel types, biodiesel and vegetable oil.

According to the history I started the page, but I certainly didn't write it. If I remember correctly it was created by Jhananda as part of his desire to have blending as a separate discipline on the wiki. He made a great start, but when we suggested that the practise was little different to veg use he seemed to stop contributing and posted pages on wikipedia instead.
That left quite a lot of orphan links and unfinished pages and I think this was one of the pages I tidied up and moved ... hence the warning in the red box at the bottom of the page.
Keith, I think the page has merit but before it's made less detailed, we need to ensure sufficient info and links are in place to Bio, Veg and Blending. I'd suggest we retain it, but I can't really see too much of a problem in reiterating information specific to veg use in an in-depth page on veg.
The "I'm working on ... " thread is a good idea. Many times in the past I've posted to that effect and it seems to have worked ok ... we're not exactly overwhelmed with contributions! We could have a sticky in the wiki section, or another board where we could list current projects and delete the threads once the page was published. Anyone any thoughts?
For everyone's information I'm currently I'm working on "Testing Methanol" and "Cone bottoms for tanks".

and I'm working on "testing cone bottoms for methanol tanks" .................. only joking

Maybe we ought to use this existing page,it was what its for

Memory like a bloody elephant! Deeply embarrassed now as I started the thread.
Should I make it a sticky so it's always at the top of the list? (I'm less likely to forget about it then!)
-
OK, if you don't mind info being repeated on more than one page, I'll carry on with my original plan and we'll iron it all out when it's finished.
Tony, do you mind me plagerising some of your work? It seems a waste of time to write basically the same info from scratch in different words. Obviously I won't be able to use it all verbatum but it will give me a good base to work from.
-
Don't mind at all - in fact, the more people touch it the better it's likely to turn out.
I've also made the "I'm working on" thread sticky as Julian suggested.
-
Thanks Tony.
For some strange reason you can't delete the first post in a thread, so I've reworded my first post, deleted some extraneous ones and added my current efforts.

OK guys, the first complete draft of my page is published here

I await your comments, suggestions, ridicule and abuse. ;)

I've been watching your progress on it, looks good. Excellent idea to have a third section on the suitability of veg oil as a fuel (on top of engine/fuel injection sections).
-
Comments, suggestions, ridicule and abuse eh ... now that's just inviting trouble!
In all honesty I think it's excellent. It fully explains many points of which I was unsure, not living in the world of veg.
Only one small point would be the repartition of "vegetable oil as a fuel" in the early text when just "vegetable oil" would suffice, but really not an issue at all.
It would be great if we could find some pics to demonstrate each fuel system type ... I'm happy to take some snaps of the Disco engine if that will help.

This is now sorted

Nice offer but wouldn't it be better to use photos from working vehicles? I guess yours would be much easier to photograph as it is always in bits on the bench!
Seriously though, there's thousands of pics all over the web but how do you know which are copyright and which are not?
-
It's not broken down for over a week, so your remarks are totally unfounded.
I've got a SPARE injection pump sitting on the bench which might be worth some photos ... let me know if you want them.
Usually if you ask the website owner, saying that the wiki is a non commercial, not for profit site you get a positive response. You can offer to credit them in text under the photo, but we DO NOT offer links.
If the photo is from an uncertain or obscure source, you could try just using it anyway with a note saying "Source: Unknown". It's not as if the wiki is gaining commercially of financially, and if anyone objects, the worst they can do in the first instance is request that it be removed.
