Title: Unusual experiences as a result of this hobby
Post by: Tony on October 29, 2014, 01:35:42 PM
I guess we've all had a few!

For me three spring to mind:

- visiting Melinda Messenger to buy a water tank and her helping me load it into the car
- having the car licked by hungry giraffes after smelling the exhaust
- a trip through a metal institution (many key coded doors) to collect the oil from their kitchen

Go on, what odd experiences have you had?

Mostly the insight into worlds that I'd never crossed paths with before.
The catering businesses, the WVO markets, and the other bio/veggers in general. Learned a tump of things about injection systems, that I probably would never have dabbled in, along with the chemistry of the process, and building the plant.
If someone had told me what it was all about, before I got involved, I wouldn't have believed them, which is probably similar to so many not believing me when I tell them about it. (not often, these days......)
Surprising how many people I thought were pretty clued up, who opened their mouths and told me with absolute authority that what I was doing was illegal, and I'd end up regretting it.
Worked out what a few think of me, when the repeatedly ask me if it's worth it, like I'm a bit simple and would put the effort in for no reward. Eye opening, for sure.
And met a whole load of people involved in other stuff that I never knew existed.
Certainly been one of my better decisions.

Much the same as GM.

I've learned so much about diesel engines, I've even given advice to AA/RAC and trained mechanics, much to their surprise (yet still have problems with my own cars I couldn't fix).

But what has really impressed me is the people I've got to know.
Levels of generosity and camaraderie I thought had died many years ago.

The BBB's are another facet of bio/veg that stands out.

'Unusual' experiences?

Aresh "Macguiver" at the BBB - does that count?

I'll echo the above sentiments.
Weirdest one last week, was buying my first UK dino in over 2 years, since buying me Skoda.
Will be doing this quite frequently for the next few months.

Now that is weird, why are you buying dino?

I've had very little in the way of odd.

However I have managed to ditch my obsession with 'upgrading' cars to keep up with the Joneses in favour of getting something that'll do the commute and that won't be hard on the bank balance if it doesn't survive. I'm slowly convincing the wife of the same thing.

The oddest thing I find is all my kids talk about filling up with oil rather than going to a petrol station and blocked fuel filter is common knowledge rather than a blank stare. Even the LPG people wagon seems perfectly normal to them, for the majority of the time i can even leave spotting the LPG pump down to them :)

Having to dress up as a woman just to please all the other wierdos at the BBB, it pleased them no end.

We are talking about abnormal things, not your average Saturday night.

Having a full page article in the Telegraph.
Changing a fuel filter whilst in black tie.
Somehow ending up as a forum admin.

'Cos I've neither the balls nor sufficient motivation (yet) to steal it. ;)
Short version: I sold our house, moved into a temporary place for 2 months before buying the next one.
Too much hassle to re-assemble the kit, make a mess, then move it all again, what with all the man cave issues I had and overcame.

Renting while moving was one of our best moves.  Otherwise you're time limited choosing a house. We were very lucky and got an amazing house thanks to not being pressured into fulfilling a chain timeslot :)

Being in a chain was as bad as I'd imagined. We were in the middle of a chain of 5. I pulled out of our purchase but wanted the sale to go through.

The day after we rented, our ideal house came back on the market again. This time our offer was accepted.

Having the cash in your pocket puts you in a very strong buying position as well.

I recently bought my first home (well, 1 bed flat). I was very surprised at how much of a difference it made once I mentioned that I was a cash buyer.

The most unusual experince for me was going from 10ppl to 20ppl when bookers upped their deal to being offered the oil for for free when the pub/restaurant changed hands to having no oil at all 4 weeks later 'cause the new guy closed it down as he bought it by mistake.

What a nob. ::)

My oil stock is going slowly down....ah well!

You're a good man Jules. Looking forward to making the trip south. Have you ordered the goods yet?

If Womble doesn't get his arse into gear, I may have some more oil for you on your way down.

I'll be over soon mate, been trying to get a batch done (managed to scrap 150L together) but things keep getting in the way.

Picked up a small trailer today, needs a little work though, so another project added to the list.

no unusual experiences for me really. just amazed I can run my cars on something that someone as useless as me can knock up in my garage, met a load of brilliant people and am massively addicted to the hobby/lifestyle/job...

I was surprised at the oil part of this though. I thought it would be easy to just walk in to a takeaway and walk away with their oil. I started paying 40-50ppl and am now paying around 30ppl. at 50ppl I was considering whether or not it was really worth it, at 30ppl theres no question.
