Title: Saponification in art
Post by: Tony on September 14, 2014, 08:15:56 AM
I was reading the wikipedia page on saponification and noticed a section at the bottom:

Oil based paint with heavy metal components can over time convert the oils in the paint to soap, which is a conservation issue for older paintings.

I never knew that :)

It's something to bear in mind.  I'll have to carefully inspect the Monet collection in the west wing.
