Title: Curses - Methanol delivery!
Post by: Tony on September 09, 2014, 03:21:08 PM
Used to get it delivered to work as the guys in goods in were quite happy to fork lift it off.  But now health and safety has stepped in and told us that under no circumstances can Methanol be delivered to site due to the potential risk to other employees. :(

Fortunately Dave is based in High Wycombe and I have a trip up there next week, so I hope to collect in person for a change!

Sadly this probably means no more palletised 205l drums, and 25l drums instead - question is how many am I allowed to transport in one hit?  330l worth?

The figure of 240ltr comes to mind Tony, in containers up to 60lt.

They have their own, unique way of unloading and moving 210 ltr drums ... they certainly don't need a fork lift.

They also have a unique way of delivering 25,s which involves filling them on the back of the lorry as you unload them, it involves deep breathes from me and the del guy swimming in meth, im sure whatever rules and regs are introduced we will still be able to buy from Dave  ;D

Well Dave is going to package it up in 20l drums, 16 of them (320l, which I understand to be under the 330l ADR limit).

What is the 205l way?  Bounce off the trunk onto tyres?  If I could get 205s delivered to home I'd prefer that generally.

I get 205s delivered to home with no problem at all. I have had them from Trinity and Barretine.

The delivery always comes on a tail lift truck and, once the pallet is on the ground, i lay the drums on their sides and roll them to where I want them, then stand them back up.
Both companies have delivered a pallet of 4 205s to my house before with no issues at all

The issue I have is that my drive slopes up from the road and the road slopes steeply downhill tangentially.  The last 7.5 tonner with tail lift that got a corner onto the drive twisted the chassis so much that the tail-lift jammed half-way down with 800kg of Methanol drums on it.  So this is not an option for me.

Buy a decent sack barrow and get Dave to deliver using the old tyre trick, although as you're not built like a brick carsy you may need a hand to push them up the drive.

Tried the sack barrow with a 205l drum on it.  The drive is steep.  So steep it's not possible to reverse up with a rear wheel drive vehicle because there is not enough weigh on the wheels, which just slip.  I do miss having a 4x4 in that respect :(

Move house.

But but but... two room brick built outbuilding with power at the end of the garden!

It would be hard to part with it for a garage with a flat entrance :)

I pump it from the full one on the back of the truck into an empty one in the right place. Usual trick of a little bit of air pressure in the full one to drive it. Takes about 15 min/200 litre drum.

Even if you just got it 1/2 empty it makes the one on the truck much easier to move!

I cant imagine the delivery drivers like waiting 15mins to empty one drum though.
I guess you are using small bore hose as I use a fitting with 22mm pipe to the bottom of the drum and 3/4" hose from the fitting to whatever I want to discharge into.
That will empty a 205 in about 2 minutes flat.

Yes, about 10m of 1/2" hose. Normally, I'm just moving it from the back of my own truck, so no waiting drivers.
