Title: Easy way to clean dirty clamp tops
Post by: Tony on August 31, 2014, 08:02:52 AM
Everyone that uses clamp tops has the odd shamefully black one - usually I clean them with petrol or Cif and a scrubbing brush (unpleasant and tiring).

Yesterday I heated up a 200l drum of water with two cubies of glyc in it, to about 70-75C.  I had a pump to stir the lot up.

Anyway, just playing the pump outlet over the black surface of the drums I could see the mank starting to clear, and just a quick pass with a washing up brush and it fell off.  I was amazed.  Must be a combination of the heat and the glyc.  Now my three mankiest drums are the three cleanest and it only took five minutes per drum.  Even the fiddly bits (around handles and the lip at the top) were easy to clean this way.  I've put the clamps in to soak overnight.

M67 heater in a plastic drum was a bit tenuous though, needed supports to stop it tipping.

I use glyc.
With some soft glyc smear it on the drum by hand, leave overnight then pressure wash off. Bottleveg gas a plasterers bath with a glyc water mix in it that he puts the drums in and turns occasionally over a couple of days before washing off. Will give hot wash a go.

Sounds risky from a chemical burns/splashing in eye perspective.

Shame you're not nearer, I'd happily give you my glyc ;)

Welcome to biopowered by the way!

Mhhmmm, I started making bio with that stuff, if I remember rightly it's 99% (or at least it was 7 years ago).  But I guess if you're diluting it enough then not so vicious.

I remember Toby near me having some impressive burns from putting some down a drain, forgetting, dropping something in the drain and sticking his arm in to retrieve it.  Took his skin off in short order.  Ouch :(

i chuck some down the drain in the garden once a week, just to be on the safe side.

there was a nervous moment when all the drains in the street blocked up but it was baby wipes....

i use about a quarter of a 500ml bottle in about 10L of cold water and give them a scrub with pound shop scourers whilst wearing pound shop rubber gloves....

i need to get shares in the pound shop! :-\
