Is there any reason for my scepticism?

It does read like some kind of parody article but despite the shoddy journalism there is most likely research going on behind it.
Exactly the kind of paper that you could find funding for writing, I suspect...

Is that an article from 1st of April?

Mucho sceptical, for more than one reason. Probably is research going on into it, but there are better ways of collecting the gases than strapping a bomb on the back of a moo cow.
Whacking a pipe up the cows exhaust isn't going to work..........

As youngsters, me and my mates (yes, I had some in those days) used to take great delight in placing bangers in cow pats and blowing them up.
Think of the fun if you could have detonating an entire cow!

used to use the crusty cow pats for frizbys when I was a kid, and one day a mate found a soup ladle and used it as a flinging tool for wet cow pats at us, lol
