Title: Bit quiet!
Post by: Julian on March 13, 2014, 03:59:21 PM

Noticing that things had been quiet on here for a little while, I jumped on the VOD and had a look ... much the same if not worse there given the size of the membership.  Only one thread bio related, one or two veg related and the balance car maintenance or totally unrelated stuff.

Is everybody making perfect bio without problems, have we developed things as far as they can go,
are all the old hands suffering bio-fatigue?

I been doing a bit of reading. And at the mo am converting my settling tank into a pre drying tank to try and dry my oil a bit faster than with the in tank Venturi. Waiting on the pump, tomorrow hopefully.  Don't need to brew for a fortnight so so yet so plenty of time.

To answer one of my own questions ... I'm managing to cock up more batches than when I first started.

Frankenpump has struck again and made another emulsion. Only seems to be since I stopped using ASM.

I guess with the nights drawing out a bit, peeps are getting out and about a bit more, and not sat on the 'puter.
I regularly go on two or three other forums, besides this one and VOD, and they are dead too.

Yes I am...no issues at all at the moment. Still making it the same wasteful way I always have with nothing but perfect results. I wish it would go wrong so that I could post up and seek the advice of those who have screwed up in the recent past. No not really!

Busy in the back ground helping people. Much easier that way and people are more appriciative. Suits me.

ASM sales still going strong. I even had an unsolicited venturi enquiry.

I've also been a little disillusioned with the bio forums recently and not been posting much, very little veg/bio post as you said Julian.

We need another "next great thing" to try out.

I've been spending some time on Landyzone reading up on my soon to be next car, two more sleeps before I pick it up.

I've been spending some time on Landyzone reading up on my soon to be next car, two more sleeps before I pick it up.

Big mistake ... big, big mistake.

If you read too much of that sort of thing you'll never have any more sleeps, worrying what's going to go wrong next.

I hope you have thick skin if you start posting on LandyZone Mark. They dont mince their words on there.

Quite ironically, I have now joined an Audi forum. Not because I particularly wanted to post, rather because they had a really good guide to the car's systems but I had to join to download it.

Not been reading about what can go wrong, haven't got that much time.

There's some green lanes around the Devils punch Bowl, that could be fun (and free).
But I can't find any info about the 4x4 track that I've seen around me.

I've only posted in the intro section at the mo, but yes I have thick skin, it's only words not bullets.

I haven't had time to do anything with work and a teething baby.

On the plus side I start my new job in a couple of weeks (10 hours less a week) and baby has started to sleep more now so I'll have a bit more energy to go up the shed.

I've got make a drying tank for the veg, so I can make bio and dry a batch of oil in the same day.

I've acquired a 120lt drum that's opaque with a scale on the side for finished bio.

Just hope the weather keeps improving.

Fuel making same old same really, nothing exciting to report.

Been busy playing with the Largo mostly.  Had some of the fuel system apart so I guess I could post that here.

Annoyingly the horn on the steering wheel doesn't work and has been replaced with a dash button.  But it only works sometimes.  Figured it out today - they'd wired the 12V feed to the horn from the cabin fan negative - so it only works when the cabin fan is off, and gets quieter/doesn't work at all when the fan is turned up.  Daft... will be fixing that now I've located the horn relay and circuit colours :)

Sounds a bit like my daughters car (petrol Corsa for sale cheap if anyone is interested).  To get the radio to work you have to beep the horn or turn the lights on and off.

I am just finishing off adding the extra bits to my setup so I have water heating in the oil settling tank and processor, fuelled by the bio boiler. Once i have done that I will post some photos. Nice closed system of burning biodiesel (rather than electricity) to make biodiesel.
The only electrical demands will be the pumps and control gear (and the lights so I can see what I am doing).
I reckon that the whole lot, including the boiler, running at the same time will use less than 1KW.
Bearing in mind that in the next few weeks my roof will gain 4KW of solar panels, my only costs are going to be the oil and chemicals
Not that exciting but will give something new to look at.

I've always found horns on the steering wheel infuriating. It always seems to be getting accidentally pressed.I'd much rather have it on a switch.

The horn on the merc is on the steering wheel, every time someone cuts me up I wash the windscreen.
I've had the bloody thing over 3 years and still haven't got used to it.

Where's the horn on a disco ?

I suspect we're on the same territory Mark.  I honestly hope your vehicle and mine turn out to be equally reliable, all Landy bashing aside.

(Here's where I try not to admit carrying a tool kit at all times too)

There's a long list of jobs that Jules has done to the car since owning it, including welding the body and chassis, replacement head, re-sealed pump, cam belt replaced, new lift pump, new clutch and much much more.
So I'm hoping I'll not need to do to much mechanical stuff in the near future, I am planing on freshening up the inside a bit and sealing up the sunroofs, then look at what else needs doing.

I also need to learn how to drive it, they are not very car like and on the drive home I got smoother, but I think the secret is not to rush them.

It's a bit like having a second wife, no matter how much care, attention and money you lavish on them, they always demand more.

and sealing up the sunroofs
Good luck with that. Every Discovery I have ever seen has leaked water through the sunroofs and the alpine light window seals. I think it is 'feature' that LandRover built in. It is also why the boot floors rot out, as that is where the water ends up.

They will make good progress, even up hill, but need the revs kept up (max torque - ie full boost pressure is at 1800rpm which is a bit higher than some car engines). They also hardly have racing clutches and gearboxes so, compared to a Merc it is going to feel different.
I tend to think of them more like a small truck or agricultural vehicle rather than a big car

The merc is auto so racing changes there.

I'm reverting to treating it more like the old Layland Roadrunner and drive it accordingly, it's quite satisfying to just bimble about in.

We've had ours, coming up to, two years now, and there has only been one time when it did not get us home - and, even then, it would have got us home, assuming we had enough fuel to keep pouring into the leaking injector pump, and enough courage to skid around on that much bio falling out the bottom!

(we were about 200 miles away - had we have been around the corner, id just have driven home)

Things do break on it all the time though...  But then it is 18 yrs old now, and we do a fair few miles in it.

4x4s all require a bit of truck treatment when it comes to driving style.  That said I could easily beat all the boy racers off the lights with the Delica and its carefully tuned autobox.  At lights with two lanes you'd see them see the back of the truck and move into the right hand lane.  So it was embarrassing for them being left in a cloud of biodiesel smoke. Around corners is where it all fell apart though!

Anyway, welcome Mark to the 4x4 fraternity - they all need more maintenance than your average road car.

I say welcome, I don't have a 4x4 anymore. :(  I'll just commiserate myself with the thought that tyres won't be so expensive.

The only time I have ever driven a Discovery was on a steep, slippy bank at a farm sale. It was hitched to a loaded trailer.
I stalled it three times, decided it needed a good reving, and ended up sliding down the bank and jack knifed it. My mate had to walk al the way back across the field to drive it from there.
A little embarrassing.
