Title: Biodiesel FAQs.
Post by: Oilybloke on February 09, 2014, 04:15:31 PM
I am presently doing some promotional work, and am getting together a list of FAQs about biodiesel & it's use. I'm sure that I have all the standard ones, including the one about it rotting your wiper blades, but any questions that our good members here have been asked (however daft or obvious) would be good to hear.

Cheers!

The main ones are.
Do you need to modify the car ?
It makes your car stink, can you small it inside ?
Can you sell me some ?

One bloke asked me the other day "Have much trouble with the police?" He obviously thought I was breaking the law.
Another one took two steps backwards and declared it was very expensive to make it.
I often get the treehugger bit, where they go apoplectic with self righteous indignation at the environmental damage growing oil seed causes.

"Will it work in my car?"
"What sort of car do you have?"
"A Ford"
"No..it won't"

Aye, nobody I've ever came clean to has ever believed it could possibly be legal, I might as well be on red too.
On the plus side my reputation as a car murderer has also stopped people stealing my veg supply. They think it's the veg that kills them, I reckon it's more to do with the cars I buy being end of life bangers in the first place :p

Back to FAQs though

The one I hear a lot is

"All those chemicals, is it dangerous?"

That's another thing I get. "I bet you put a bit of red in", said with a devious wink, as though I'm going to pay more money to do something illegal.

My most recurring seems to be -

Can you still use regular diesel in the car?

(So you can still fill up at the petrol station if you run out?)

Another one I've been asked a few times, "can you make petrol as well?"

That's probably my most common query too. I have been asked several times if I can remove the dye from red diesel! Many thanks guys, keep 'em coming.

The first time i tried to buy hardwood shavings from a supplier, i needed to make sure they were hard, and not soft wood.

The chap asked me what i was up to with them, and i said something like "chemical filtration", not thinking he wanted to hear about biodiesel and soaps.

Anyhow, he (thought he) knew exactly what i was up to, and started chatting.  It seems that what we use to remove soaps will remove the dye (and i guess, possibly, the chemical marker?) from red?

I think the only way i managed to convince the chap was by explaining to him that my (legal) bio worked out a whole load cheaper than using (illegal) red!

My remark at work today bit me right on the arse, when I pointed out that red diesel would likely end up with HMRC turning my car into a small metal cube my workmates just suggested that this would be taking out the middle man and save me the time of organising the scrappy :P

I take it they are not expecting to ask for lift favours anytime soon then?
