Looks nice. Not overpriced. Just hope the mileage is correct. Seems awfully low for the age. Great if it is right.

Will be the lowest mileage car we've owned if it is. Just needs the stalling issue fixed.

I don't know anything specific about this vehicle, and hate sludge boxes with a passion, but I remember hearing somewhere that there is a sensor that slightly increases the engine revs when reverse is selected. It may even be a mechanical device.
It's to do with the fact that when you select reverse, it rotates a shaft counter ways to the engine, putting slightly more stress on the engine for a brief moment. It doesn't happen in forwards gear, because the shafts are already turning the same direction as the engine.
If this sensor, or mechanism fails, then it over loads the engine and stalls it. Obviously when the engine and box is hot, then the extra drag is insignificant.
I've also heard they can play this game because the gear box oil needs changing, it's gone dirty and thick.
Might be something to dig a little deeper into.
I've just re read it and it says its doing it in forward gears as well. Same thing anyway. 'Box oil or sensor. I'd change the 'box oil first. Try and find out if the box oil and viscous flywheel oil are changed separately or if it's all in the box.

I like that! Very unique which always appeals to me. Also quite well specced for a bus.
I would follow Greasemonkeys advice and change the ATF and filter first with correct ATF. Also find out how to check the level as over or under filling on some boxes can cause issues.
Other wise it looks like a very nice motor. Is it 4x4? Also is it IDI?

It does need to be the "correct" fluid as well. Some of these problems are caused by garages sticking in what they consider to be a higher spec fluid, when in fact it's not higher spec, it's quite simply the wrong fluid.
It needs what the manufacture says it needs, even if there is a "better" fluid available.

It's a Bosch fly-by-wire pump which from what I gather essentially means a Bosch-VE with electronic throttle rather than a nice mechanical rotary arm controlling the governor.
The symptoms sound a bit like pump shaft seal failure, if that's the case hopefully isn't too much of a big deal; I think on that engine it can be changed without removing the pump as it's driven off a belt from the rear of the engine. So belt off, gear off, seal out and in, reverse. It's that or the crankshaft position sensor is on the way out.
Either way shorting a couple of ECU pins gets it to blink out fault codes using the ECU light on the dash. (Used to work for an ECU diagnostics company so this is safe territory for me!) so I think this is the place to start. And the crankshaft sensor is fairly straightforward to test.
From the listing the document from the diesel injection specialist says "unable to see fuel pump" - it's pretty hard to miss hanging off the right of the engine..(!) Worst case is replace the whole pump, given there was a guy selling them on eBay for £17, it's just the spanner time extends into a few hours for that kind of task.
Nice bus just needs some TLC, I'm just hoping it's within my capabilities :)

I've been asked that a few times today.
Given she puts up with bio brewing and mess all over the place it's only fair to say that she is very understanding!

Wish I could persuade mine, I had to pass on a couple of people wagons that were perfect and very cheap because of auto box problems that were most likely knackered fluid. Now she's decide monster truck (Delica) for family stuff and the 106 for day to day running is the way forward.

The Galaxy/Sharan/Alhambra range with the 110 Bhp engine around 98 to 2001 are fly by wire pumps too so another possible source of info to Tony.

The plan of attack is read diagnostic codes, test the crankshaft position sensor then move onto pump EDC electronics, which might culminate in swapping the pump out for one from a breaker - if I can find one, these cars are a bit like hen's teeth.

I'm not far away (just at the bottom of the A24) if you need a hand or, assuming it will run on veg, some veg for the trip back.

Appreciated Keith, I think it'll be OK back on dino (53 miles, so couple of gallons at most). If I get stuck cranking with a flat battery though it might be useful to have someone to call with jump leads - though I doubt it'd come to that!

You wont get that much help - the only 300Tdi engines fitted with with the EDC pump were in the automatic discoveries. All the other 300Tdi engines had the Bosch VE mechanical pump.
As said, lots of VAG engines (the 90 and 110BHP Tdi) use them as does the BMW M51

As far as I know, the only difference between the electronic version and the mechanical version is that the fuel rack is controlled by a solenoid type arrangement. It's essentially an electromagnet controlled using a PWM signal from the ECU with feedback and a control loop to ensure correct positioning.
Timing and the pumping is all done mechanically. I'd imagine that bit is all the same.

Collected new motor, it's loooooovely. I like that the sliding door you just gently shut and with a whine of motors the car sucks it into place *clunk*
Missus loves it already, kids will love it I'm sure!
Oh and already running on bio, I took some with me on the train ;)

Yes ours we transported in a rucksack but also wrapped in a plastic bag to contain leaks ;)
No danger for me, I'm clearly not middle eastern, in fact in Budapest one of the locals mistook me for an Australian.

I bought some Unicum for the missus because of the comedy name. It's 40% ABV. Anyway, this stuff makes your eyes water. I can't even offload it on the Hungarians at work because they're not keen either!
