This stems from a discussion today with a colleague where one of us facetiously suggested that you could just use toothpaste instead of thermal paste for CPU/SSR heatsinks.
Well, a google later and it turns out - you can! But you need to mix it 75% smooth toothpaste with 25 Vaseline to stop it drying out to a powder.
Another suggestion, probably a better one - is to use baby nappy rash cream, as some of it is over 40% zinc oxide - a key constituent in Arctic Silver and similar heat sink compounds.
I've also read about people using copper grease, but having to be careful with application because it's electrically conductive.
Just thought I'd throw it out there as a discussion point :)
