You 4x4 owners may be able to get going, make it up the hills easier, but when it comes to stopping you still only have 4 x breaked wheels but all that extra weight.
I hate having a 4x4 behind me in the snow and ice.

Our discovery is easier to skid than any other car ive owned before.
It was novel getting wheelspin the other day though - a trailer load of unsplit rounds (wood) and a steep hill. Had to put the transfer box into low, and forgot quite how low that was, as i took my foot off the clutch a bit too quickly.

You 4x4 owners may be able to get going, make it up the hills easier, but when it comes to stopping you still only have 4 x breaked wheels but all that extra weight.
I hate having a 4x4 behind me in the snow and ice.
You need the right tyres dear boy, ones with big nobbly bits! Any way any one in front of you with your rear wheel drive Rostlaube (use google translate! ;)) will likely feel exactly as you do!

More weight but 4wd engine braking makes a big difference too. Agree on the tyres, definitely helps. I wonder if I get to tow any more BMWs off our road this year :)

I do feel smug! Not only do I have a 4x4 that is made in Japan I also have an E300TD with no body rust. :)
Having said that my 4x4 over heated within 3 miles after a 2k head job and my E300TD has rusty strut under the engine bay and my son broke one of the stalks, not sure which, either the indicator or the cruise control one!!

I'm quite looking forward to a bit of snow...if only to test out the effectiveness of my winter tyres. This will be my first year with winter rubber. The wife has them on the Golf as well so should see an increase in confidence on her part.
As an aside to the rubber my doorstep samples looked rather interesting this morning at 5.30. Two of them were solid and the third, winterised with synergy, was a pure clear liquid. It really works this stuff. IMHO the best on the market of those I've tried.

I still have most of the synergy I bought from Jules last year as I only used a few hundred mls for one batch during the real cold snap below freezing, but I have graduated take valves on my wvo settling tank so I only take good oil from the highest take off valve for winter bio.

Mine isn't a rust heap, it's made of nice fresh patches welded together :) (Many of which were from bits of steel supplied by Chug at BBB 2011 IIRC!)
