Bugger ... Disco tank full of untreated bio and little prospect of using it up, one out of two a settling barrels full of untreated bio.  Gonna have to hope the heated filter does it stuff!

Woohoo my truck will be ready next week! Just looking at some all terrains for it as we speak! ;D

It's all over the news, but I can't find anything about it in the long term weather forecasts.
Rumour has it that councils are panic buying salt.
I think it is an illuminati, NWO mind control exercise, to drive people into fear, and push up the price of road salt, winter tyres, and non perishable goods. :P

Thats one of the reasons I stopped reading newspapers.
This country will come to a standstill if we get an inch of snow
30ft waves eh and people dying on the  A350 near Trowbridge, Wiltshire, while a driver died when his Jeep spun off the A35 near Bournemouth.

Snow in November, huh!

They can't get a 3 day forecast right never mind a month in advance.

Well it looks like the Met Office agrees with you Jim:

I know a little bit about short term weather forecasting and meteorology, had to pass exams on the subject to get me skippers ticket.

Even had to turn the Shipping Forecast into a weather chart.

what a load of cobblers. nearly as bad as the daily mail. of course it will be cold in January. its called winter. summat to do with the sun i think. reminds me of the gill scott heron poem "panic now and avoid the rush."

If engineering ran to the same level of accuracy as long term weather forecasts we would still be waiting for the wheel to be invented.

Aye, there's a lot of the usual panic around. Everytime someone quotes an imaginary long range forecast at me I remind them that the newspapers predicted a heatwave 5 years in a row and the only time there actually was one they had been preaching rain, floods, doom and gloom in the weeks leading up to it.

Incidentally does anybody want to buy some snow chains, I've got a set I'll never use lying around, if it gets that bad in the UK I just won't leave the house :p

What size wheel are they for? Are they heavy duty 4WD ones? In other words, are they for a Transit?

Mine were brilliant, go anywhere, so long as I was in no hurry. Wrecked them in the end, but they did two years.

Aren't snow chains what the landy boys use to pull Jeeps from snow drifts.
Sorry I used the J word Julian.

I used mine to tow father home in his Rover 400. Everything was going well, till we hit a steep hill. Half way up, just as it goes from steep, to really steep, the chains cut through the fresh snow, and I lost traction.
Rolled down the window to consult with father, and that exact moment, I took off backwards like a toboggan. Never seen the transit accelerate so quickly.

Father started reversing, and obviously, as soon as I regained control, his car pulled the towrope tight, and sent me sliding again. I was trying everything to stop, nothing was working. At one point the front end went straight up the bank, and back down again. I'm pretty sure I had one wheel spinning one way, and one going the other, revving flat out in bottom gear.

After pulling me backwards about four times, the tow rope snapped, and we both broadsided in the road. I am so glad I decided to use a rope, and not a chain..........

The snow chains were never quite the same after that.

snow chains will damage your tyres if driven for any distance, there are for getting you out of trouble.
think there are only a couple of size's

Never made a mark on them. Main thing is, don't go too fast, they say max 40mph. In my experience, it's more like 10mph. If you can do 40, you don't need them on......

I could imagine spinning the wheels would cause the chain to damage the tyre, especially if the wheel spun in the chain. But if that is happening, they're not fitted properly.

I usually run the tyres at around 45psi. I found letting them down to 35 gave a better ride with the chains on, and more grip with them off, just had to put up with the slightly wobbly feel when back on tarmac. What will kill the chains is running them on tarmac, they really don't like that, and I don't expect the tyres do either.
It is a bit of a pain, when the road is only semi covered in snow, too much to get up the hills without them, but not enough on the flats.

Car chains would just fold up on a transit, gotta be at least the lightest of the heavy duty ones.
There are some fantastic ones about. The trouble is, its a big jump between the just about adequate £100 ones, and the next step up, which seems to be about the £250 mark. I'd love a pair of them, but can hardly justify it.

These are the ones I had

Five year guarantee with these
http://www.snowchains.com/4x4-snow-chains/ziptransport

This is a brilliant idea

To be honest, I'm surprised how the prices have dropped, and the options increased since I bought mine

Nah, just middle car sized, bought them for the estima during that really bad winter a 3 years back but never got stuck enough to use them, for a rear wheel drive auto people wagon it handled really well even when nigh on axle deep in the white stuff.

Oh well.
I'm very tempted by that pair with the five year guarantee. I'm sure my other ones would still be ok, if it wasn't for the acrobatics on the steep hill, but they just didn't feel quite strong enough.

In 50 years of driving in all conditions I have never needed snow chains

Just got stuck instead

cheap ones are hard to fit especially on a cold night. the better ones are quick and easy to put on.

Mine were a bit of a piglet to get on. They do recommend fitting them a couple of times before you need to use them in anger, and I'm glad I did. The first time I fitted them, it was like they were never going to go on.
Getting them on in -6, in a howling gale, with frozen hands, and the rust on the wheel arches slashing your wrists is fun, especially if it is dark as well.

haven't you been watching ice road truckers?  trying to get the snow chains on in a-40 in a blizzard.i live on a c road, so we don't get gritted. and i and right on a blind bend on a hill. i send for supplies when it gets that bad and collect them from the top of the field, where you come in for the BBB.

I've been driving for 12 years now. (Wow, that makes me feel old!)

Never needed snow chains yet and never got stuck. I've carried bits of carpet and a shovel when it snows just in case, but never needed them.

Am I just lucky?

Same here although with 20 years driving now, once took me an hour to crawl out of a car park on a hill that was just a sheet of ice top to bottom but that's been it so far.
Had to stop and dig someone out once they dug themselves back in about 10 yards later, after a second attempt they finally got moving, I got back in my Serena and drove on no shovel required. Lucky or good I'm never quite sure, either way I'm doubtful I'll be so cocky in the Transit.

I've been on the road 17 years, but only had a provisional for the first four..........

I guess it just depends where you live. From the main road to home is around three miles of single lane track. I do wonder if the council even knows it is here. Lots of deep banks and steep hills, and most of it is wrong facing, so never gets the sun in the summer, let alone winter.

It's not uncommon to have to abandon the vehicle in a farmers yard about a mile from home, and either get a lift home, or walk, when the snow is down.
One year some thieving Tw*t took a tool box out of my (unlocked) van, that I had had to abandon. It must have been a local farmer, because there was that much snow, no one else would have been using the road. Pretty sure I know who it was........

A couple of years back when t snowed quite heavily we took the kids out for a trip into the New Forest.

So out in the middle of nowhere there was a car stuck in the middle of the road, and around it are six of these ponced up 4x4s with spotlights and winches with blokes out "helping" (presumably waited all year for this!).

They all turned as they heard us approach - you should've seen their faces when we detoured around them down the slope, through the ditch and back up the other side, it was priceless!  (I guess the Delica looks like a people carrier rather than a 4x4).

We went on to build snowmen and watch the deer in a deserted and perfectly quiet part of the forest - a really lovely family experience.
