i have a rover 420 1997 2ltr p reg. been running fine on 50/50 diesel and veg mix. ive just instaled a veg tank. just been to scotland init. it ran fine nearly ran out of fuel so filled the main tank with deisel as i had no veg oil left in the veg tank. it ran for a while until i had to stop and then would not start again. if anyone could help with this i would be very greatful thank you as the engine turns over but will not fire but fires when being towed off. ???

You've changed the fuel filter?
-
yes i have thank u
-
Valves changing over properly, from one tank to the other?
See that you actually have fuel getting to the injectors to start with.
-
Have you got any clear pipe to put on the IP inlet, to make sure fuel is being delivered, and that there are no bubbles.
-
Recheck pipe joints it may be pulling air.
It would be ok with oil with a bad seal but diesel is a different story.
-
ive got clear pipe from the primer the fuel filtter and from the fuel filter to the injector pump. ive got clear pipe on the return aswell. fuel is getting to the injectors but will not start. the car will run if im towed off and as soon as i stop the engine it wont start again.
i have disconnected the veg and it is running on straight diesel at the moment. it was running on veg 3 days ago when i was in scotland but because i ran out of veg oil i had to switch back to the main tank which at the time was a 50/50 mix. i nearly ran out of fuel so stopped at a garage to fill up with diesel and its run right since as explained above. thank you

So the engine turns over, but won't fire?
What's your battery like?
Are the headlights dim when you have them on, without the engine running?
What happens if you try to start it with the headlights on, do they about go out?
Does the engine sound like it is turning over normally, or is it slow?
Have you tried jump starting it from another vehicle?
Does it run normally when tow started?
-
Sounds like a fuel presure fault
how much fuel return is there
-
Maybe stop solenoid isn't working properly. Take out and replace with guts removed?
-
Wait wait wait - does your IP have a mesh filter built into the inlet under the banjo at the front of the pump? Check that isn't blocked.
-
ive done all the above and they are all fine. it starts up on a tow first time and starts up on easy start when sprayed into the engine, but when you stop the engine and try and restart it it wont have it. any ideas i would be very grateful
-
Just to confirm - you have:
- checked glow plugs actually glow when put across battery
- checked mesh filter under inlet banjo (if fitted)
- removed/replaced stop solenoid?
-
Once it's running does it actually run OK? Or is it down on power/smokey?
-
It could simply be that the starter motor is not turning the engine fast enough. The symptoms would be similar if the engine was worn, and down on compression. It could be a slightly slow starter motor, or it's not getting quite enough power, or the battery is a bit weak, or a combination of all of them.
Not that that is a diagnosis, just that the above would produce those symptoms.

had same the other day on a 51 plate bora, it had air in system flatted battery trying to start it (usually starts first key) so we bumped it and if fired straight up, it eventually cleared the air out.... ok now.
when you first ran out was it tottally empty and stalled stopped? then you switched to other tank?
does it fire up on diesel ok now?

i have done everything everyone has kindly sugested. ive fitted a new started motor, ive stripped all the injectors out and cleaned them, including the injector feed lines, ive checked the start stop selunoid thats working fine. ive had the pump timing done, its struck up off the key but as soon as you stop it it wont start again. there is no air in the fuel line system. checked banjo bolt all clear. ive have checked the air flow meter thats fine. no air in the system.
if anyone has any ideas i would be grateful as i feel like im flogging a dead horse
i did not run out of fuel

Any sign of fuel leaking from the injection pump driveshaft? Can you put some clear pipe on the pump return (the one that goes back to the tank) to see if that is creamy - indicating air getting into the pump itself either through the drive shaft seal or maybe throttle arm shaft?
-
Just out of interest have you put a live feed to the stop solonoid then tried to start it?
it may loose the 12v feed while turning over.
