The first new star treck film was pretty good, and im not much into trecking.  I have not seen the one thats just out on dvd though.
"Touching the void" was memorable, if you want something completely different.

Tony,

What do you think of Prometheus?

Personally, i thought it was reasonable, but, with a few real such small changes, could have been so much more / a classic.

The flight of the Phoenix the first one not the crap remake
good book to must have read it a dozen times
fantastic acting especially by Richard Attenborough

Prometheus I found a bit disappointing. Too inconsistent and too much left unanswered, I guess that's what happens when you involve a writer from Lost.

This says it all really:

 http://digitaldigging.net/blog/prometheus-an-archaeological-perspective/

(very good read if you haven't read it already)

Prometheus is a funny one, the first time I watched it, it certainly didn't seem like the mega film it was hyped to  be. The second time, it seemed a lot better, and by the third watching, it seemed like a different film altogether.

Looper, great n the first watching, but turned off half way through the second time. Maybe needs a few months before I watch it again.

Best film lately, Sourcecode. Only watched it once, but seemed like the sort of film I'll still be watching in five years time.

Watched looper recently.  It was better than expected (i find bruce willis pretty dull), but why torture the first chap to get his older self in?  Why not just top him?

Irritating flaws.  One single flaw like that can wreck an otherwise reasonable movie for me.

How could i forget?  Battle Royal.  Even with your avatar.

2nd one is a joke though.

Dirty water was good too.  The japanese one (i think, maybe, theyve remade it, like they did "The Ring"?)

Tony,

I was careful in my comment above not to ruin it for anyone who has not seen it.  Its a minor, supporting part, of the film, but its still irritating.

I dunno about BR, but I have it on DVD. Think it was £7. That is the most I will pay. Wait long enough and they all end up at £3 anyway.

It's well worth watching, it's a good film. Just maybe one that isn't going to age very well.

Brazil.

Hilarious in that subtle dry way that I like. Complete with steampunk, industrialism, and some fantastic cinematography.

+1 for brazil

ive just remembered festen - a truely excellent film (although too dificult to call a 'favourite')

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Festen

Really well worth watching.  An example of Dogme film making too, so unusual / novel production also -

Shooting must be done on location. Props and sets must not be brought in (if a particular prop is necessary for the story, a location must be chosen where this prop is to be found).
The sound must never be produced apart from the images or vice versa. (Music must not be used unless it occurs where the scene is being shot.)
The camera must be hand-held. Any movement or immobility attainable in the hand is permitted.
The film must be in colour. Special lighting is not acceptable. (If there is too little light for exposure the scene must be cut or a single lamp be attached to the camera).
Optical work and filters are forbidden.
The film must not contain superficial action. (Murders, weapons, etc. must not occur.)
Temporal and geographical alienation are forbidden. (That is to say that the film takes place here and now).
Genre movies are not acceptable.
The film format must be Academy 35 mm.
The director must not be credited.

That all sounds like useless art bollocks, but, again Festen is a very good film, and it all works very well.

Yes it's another cracker from Tarantino. :)

Watched "The Cabin in the Woods" yesterday,  can't say I'm a horror genre fan but it's a good movie - mostly for poking fun at the well trodden plot devices used in horror movies.  Plus I want the collapsible bong/mug/club that one of the protagonists has. ;)

The Conjuring I want to watch.  Have you seen The Ring?  That's pretty creepy.

I really like the Saw films, the protagonist John Kramer I really like as a character, he's the kind of person I'd love to have a chat with over a pint, so long as he doesn't try to "test" me. ;)

Watching the Final Destination franchise series at the moment but it's pretty dire - just want to watch it to see what the fuss is about.

Elisyium is another one on my want-to-watch list.

i got the ring somewhere im not really a horror spooky fan

saw films i hated the gore with a passion BUT! the idea behind the films made me watch first 3 then the gore took over and didnt watch rest. whoever the guy was who made the sets or moreover the idea script for these films is sick lol

but what an inventor, be good on here :)

just watched moonrise kingdom. agree its up there with the best of the best. have you watched any of wes andersons otehr films? the royal tenabaums is another wonderful film as well.

watched royal tenabaums years ago... think I might... erm... acquire it and watch it again :-)

any other recommendations along the same lines ? I watch loads of films but forget most of them within 5 min :o

edit... just checking imdb... Fantastic Mr. Fox is one of his too... another great film :-)

"the station agent" is highly recommended  "being john malkovich" is another.

thx will check it out

i know saying "the best movie i have seen" is very subjective, but see what you think of "the visitor" this is by the same director as "the station agent" watch it before you read the reviews, they just don't do it justice. turn off the phone feed the cat and sit back and enjoy. definitely one to watch without interruption's.

Not heard of it, just checked IMDB, sounds right up my street :)

Edit: 10 minutes in and so far seems ridiculously contrived - hope it gets better!

Edit: Nope it doesn't - ah well worth a shot thanks for suggesting :)

you sure you got the right one? there are a few with similar titles. the one i meant was  directed by thomas mccarthy. there is another one with the same name i believe. went to see nebraska last week, that very good as well. well i think it is anway to be subjective.

We watched Dr Strangelove last night, quite a funny old film, then we watched Network, another oldy but right on the money with the media brainwashing and the 'Tube generation' not knowing anything other than what comes out of it.

The post about Dr Strangelove has reminded me (as i watched it in the same cinema in brighton) that, years ago, i saw Amores Perros, and remember it being good.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amores_perros

Ive been remembering it more often recently, and keep meaning to watch it again.

Im not convinced Rachel will like it though, hence not getting around to it sooner.

Cloud Atlas.
Probably one of the best movies I have seen. I can well imagine it's a bit of a marmite movie, mind.
Watched it last night, and think I will watch it tonight again. Never done that with any other movie.

Absolutely amazing. A cinematic microcosm of society. For those of you uninterested in topics like '1984' and 'Animal Farm', watch this film for a hazard course in understanding the human condition. From start to end you see a small-scale depiction of society from it's most basic 'proletariat' level, right up to the elite, in perfect order. And we see the evolution of civilisation from simple beginnings to science, education, quality, luxury, then hedonism, wastefulness and eventual demise, in exactly that order.

All of that can be overlooked, however, if you're just the average movie-goer who simply wants a good story with a hero, an adventure and an end goal. In which case I say the film is a good one but nothing special in that respect. Certainly there were parts where I thought, "eh?", until it clicked later that it was all part of the Director's greater cinematic design.

But for the arty film student types, this film is sure to be the topic of many, many essays for years to come.

Clearly every part of the film was deliberate - every shot, every line of script, every item in the background. It was true art. None of that quick-buck profit-incentive Hollywood stuff.

In conclusion I recommend this film to everyone, particularly people who want to learn something or gain some insight from what they watch. For the everyday movie-lover, go into this with an open mind and have a really long think about how you can compare it to the world today.

Top stuff, 10/10

I'd watch it again, but I've watched it twice now. I'm wary of not leaving enough time between re watching good films, in case I get bored of them, and it puts me right off.
I watched a few too close together, and can't sit through them now.

Sounds like a very interesting film.

Reminds me of the book http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Absolution_Gap though in this case the globe's equator is a road that carries cathedrals, in order that observers on the cathedrals can watch a particular moon 24/7.  An ecosystem hangs off the cathedrals, as does power.  It's quite a dark book in places.

I shall give Snowpiercer a go :)

Another one I've been meaning to re-watch after many years is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Island_(2005_film)

well snowpeircer is like what you describe tony, found it very weird, odd, watched it twice now, couldn't grab the overall theme/meaning of it all apart from the need for a well oiled machine at any cost, reminded me of rungs of a ladder we all have our place, one missing there is no ladder.

just watched "the grand budapest hotel." one of wes andersons best so far. i wouldn't say THE best as i think that would be to subjective. watched it on the big screen. well worth forking out the money to see it at a cinema as there are some tricks that wouldn't look right  on a small screen. will go and see it again before it disappears. luckerly penzance has a good arts cinema with little popcorn munching or people that leap out of thier seats as soon as the credits start to roll.

Err, something a bit different from my normal fare.
The Lion, The Witch, And The Wardrobe.
No, I haven't gone stark staring bonkers. It's actually pretty good.
If you thought the book was good, sat reading it on your Aunties knee when you were six years old, then you'll like the film.
I really should read the book again.

just watched cloud atlas. i am not sure,, it certainly doesn't have that Hollywood  feel about it, which is good, but i thought it was trying to do too much even in 3 hours. sort of film to watch when full of dinner on a wet sunday afternoon with nothing else to do.

museum hours is a excellent film. just to show what can be done with just 2 main characters and one main set.

"John dies at the End"

Stumbled upon it just recently - i thought it was excellent, but im not sure if Rachel enjoyed it as much.  Different history, i guess?

edit:

Just found this quote from a review -

Quote
there’s rarely any certainty about what’s real and what Dave and John have unintentionally conjured from their drug-addled, reality-warping subconscious. Still, there’s an underlying sense that the pair are taming the drug as the adventure progresses, and by the end of the film the ratio of chemically-induced terror to chemically-induced heroism (a twisted, non-traditional sort of heroism, but heroism all the same) gradually shifts into their favor. It’s a subtle transition that could’ve been easily overdone – or even not done at all – but Coscarelli does a nice job of turning his aimless slackers into our dimension’s best hope for survival.

...but its way more 'fun' and fast moving to watch than, say, a scanner darkly, or naked lunch (etc).
