Title: How crowded is your shed?
Post by: Keef on August 10, 2013, 06:47:07 PM
I was looking with amazement at all the stuff in my shed today.

It measures 3'6" x 9' and I seem to have managed to pack in

900 litres of filtered oil in 20 litre containers
400 litrs of unfiltered oil in various containers
60 litres of misfuel
4 sheet filtering drums on spill pallets
plus all sorts of empty containers, buckets, drip trays etc

It's pretty snug but it all works quite well. I could do with a door at both ends so it becomes more of a production line.  ;D

That's a bit more than what I have got in my shed, and it's 13 foot by 15 foot. I can't turn around in there, I have to reverse out.............
Think I need to get my act together.

That's pretty bad.

Our 'garden' is not great at the moment.  Ive given up counting, but i think the total stash is currently about 3k liters, and over two of them are in the garden : /

Im very much trying to work out when stockpiling becomes silly - it would be simpler if it was all from regular supplies, but most is from 1-off collections, so, whilst i have 3k outside, i still went off to our local pub today to pick up another 30 ltrs, so as to maintain the collection!

And, yes, i have made it clear to the brewers in the area that i have plenty at the moment, in case theyre short, but, it seems, everyone else is ok also : )

Luckily I only filter, I can't imagine how much extra room I'd need with a processor, settling tank, chemicals etc

Very tidy and clean. I have four sheds and they are all full and grubby. Every time I clean up and get rid of something I always need it the next week.
Friend has a massive barn and that is always full, partly of my digger and spare lister.
It seems that c**p expands to fill ie available space + a bit.

Wish you were closer
I would love to take some off your hands as its hard to get hold of when starting out.

any local oil donations welcome. LOL

Not any more, I used to but haven't now for well over a year.

I only run 'end of life' motors anyway so when I moved into this tiny shed and it became difficult to dewater, I just didn't bother.

If it kills the car, I'll throw it away and buy another.

My laboratory started off 8ft by 8 ft, it was brimming with stuff, so added another 4 ft x 8ft and its still full, the more room you have the more  you collect. Its hard to throw out something that will come in handy, just after you ve thrown it  out.

I've had a couple of shed purges of non-useful stuff, now there is a lot more space and I'm glad of it - though it is still bit of mess!

Having seen it Tony....I think your shed will always be a bit of a mess.....whatever you do to try and clean it up. ;D

Keef's seen it too, I think he got out without leaving his shoes stuck to the floor ;)

Part of it is setup and part is volume.

By that I mean that if things were better organised in there, there would be less opportunity for spills.  I'm working on that bit!  Volume - well, I definitely get through nearly my whole 2500l allowance every year.  With 125l batches that's 20 a year - and those small spills per batch add up over the years.

With bigger batches it'll be easier to keep on top of the cleaning - as I won't be doing it anywhere near as often - and the hard-plumbed kit will help as well :)

My shed is six foot square.  There in I've got ...

2, 100 ltr oil settling drums
2, 100 ltr bio settling drums
processor with two pumps and associated bits
storage for 16, 20 ltr drums
a beer chiller
sink with water and drainage and small work top with storage for chemicals etc underneath
a centrifuge
and a 50 ltr pretreatment tank

The ever increasing over spill equates to three 210 ltr drums outside.  2 containing special reserve oil and 1 containing Wombles soap.  The side of the house, now under cover, has a 400 ltr bio tank, pump hose and nozzle, with potential storage for more 20 ltr drums ... oh, and 100 ltrs of Jules's bio.

All a bit of a squeeze which is why I'm intending to go to square tanks and processor ... probably won't make too much more room, but I may be able to run bigger batches.

You forgot to mention the posh lino on the floor  ;D

I wouldn't say posh, but I'd agree with tasteful, but it doesn't take up much space ... Womble has similar good taste to me and now has the same.

I did, however, forget to mention the small compressor sitting under the processor and the 25 ltr methoxide mixer.  Soon I'll have to stand at the door and work the equipment with broom sticks.

Your shed may be small but it's clean, something I'm struggling with in my new place (hence no photos), but it is cleaner than my last shed.

A septic tank is cleaner than your last shed!

very neat compared to my disaster area, there's cubies of watery sludge I refuse to give up on, a burco full of sludge I haven't got around to emptying, 4 20litre gravity filters and some garden tools gathering rust.
There's a carpet under there somewhere too but I haven't seen it since I started filtering wvo and joined the forum, I've got a couple of planks of wood on the floor to keep me from standing on the worst of it.

14ft x 30ft, just getting some floorspace back as I sell bits and bobs (had a path to the processor and a path to a fridge through the back bit).
Moved a lot of cubies up the loft, got rid of some glyc and I've 10 metal drums to get shot of then I might have enough room to assemble the new processor.

14ft x 30ft !!!!! I live in less space than that.

The bigger it is, the less disciplined you are about where everythings left lying thought.

And you keep things you really should get rid of.

Mine is 13' X 11'
In there is a 400 litre processor, 800 litre oil settling tank, 205 litre drum of methanol, roll along tool chest, stainless catering table, sink unit, dishwasher, pump and filter setup for my fuel dispensing nozzle, loads of shelving and a huge collection of plumbing and electrical bits.
On the rack under the catering table are a trolley jack, axle stands, mig welder, grinders and assorted large tools.
Outside is a 1400litre finished biodiesel storage tank
