We can't get anything from the tip anymore, crazy when there's so much good and useful stuff that could be used.

I've just found a nest of 23 used UPS batteries. All disconnected for at least 2 years and all still registering >12V, and destined for the skip (well, to be recycled).

Funnily enough, I have a UPS that needs a minimum of 8. But I think it'll get 16 giving it a standby capacity of nearly 3kWh.

one of my pet hates. we completely furnished  the house with stuff from the tip. i used to go down there at least twice a week and find all sorts of things. now a certain french outfit has got the contract we are not allowed to take anything. i did write to them when they got the contract and complained. not surprisingly i got no reply. the council did try to cancel the contract a few years ago but it would have cost 2 million. idiot council just signed a 30 year contract without reading it. so much for "recycling" they have a sign saying something like 65% recycled this month. 65% of what ?

I agree, morally this is totally wrong, but don't blame the company or the Council ... it's the cotton wool society in which we now live where Government is legislating to protect stupid people.

"Oh, that TV I got from the tip blew up when I plugged it in and burnt my house down.  I sue the French company for letting me take it away".

Or ...

"I tripped over a leaf at the tip I'll sue the council for 10 grand so I can have the next year off work"

It's just all too easy these days, little wonder you can't remove stuff from the tip.  This country really needs more stupid people to eliminate themselves from the gene pool so the don't breed more stupid people.  We are very big on protectring a few scrawny birds on the Svern estuary at the cost of cheap power ... mustn't interfear with nature.  But it's nature in the form of natural selection that should be removing stupid people from society.

Join Freecycle, often there's a lot of junk on there, but once in a while there's a gem or two.

The tips here each have a shipping container with doors on the longest side and a sign "sales" where they put all the interesting stuff for people to peruse.  Technically no electricals but if you find something around the back (IE, tea urn) they're happy enough to part with it for a few quid :)

If anyone tried taking metal from the local tip here they would probably be summarily executed before they left the site, and buried in the landfill.
I hate seeing people hauling metal in there. Not only could they actually be getting money for it, they could just give it to me, or any other scrap collector, and have it taken away.

Normal life expectancy of a Womble is around 300 years,  I only have 48 days left !

I'll have to make the most out of Friday the 5th.

You could always down a couple of pints of Vince's rocket fuel

a) any pain will be numbed
b) all inhibitions lost
c) gravity doesn't work as previously expected

There's one small drawback to your plan to make the most of the 5th, I'll be there, hahahahahaha.

I dare say you're fashioning the skewer as we speak.  Bet you're taking great joy in making the pointy end really pointy, however, remember there will probably be more pain involved if it's blunt.

Heating it may make the job of inserting a blunt instrument a little easier ... if it was good enough for Edward II then it should be good enough for an aging Womble.

that was the system here till a few years ago as well. nice friendy helpfull staff. happy to jump in a skip for you if you asked them. now i need a bloody licence just to go in there.
12 goes a year, then you have to wait till the next year. i used to think i was doing my bit with recycling, but now i feel i am just just lining the pockets of some foreign multinational. i do use freecycle but i used to like finding treasure in a skip. still i do have a mate with a scrapyard. only problem is he is 400 miles away.

Julian, he doesn't need any encouragement from you.
I thought you were my friend.
