Title: Inverter (remote control) ? 12volt DC to 240volt AC
Post by: Rotary-Motion on May 17, 2013, 06:12:49 AM
hi all

i got this beauty off dick, it didnt have a 240volt socket or long leads on it so got to play with it yesterday and fitted some, jump leads came from chug at last years BBB and the socket i dug out the skip bag i was dumping saturday,  8)

but in looking further it says and looks like i could power this by a distance away so to  speak, but just need confirmation by electrical people here, looking at the front panel it can be switched into remote (on/off/remote) 3x setting on front panel switch, the board has 4 wire positions, and this i need to know what they do / mean and where they wire too?

im thinking this could be fitted under my bonnet (short battery leads) and then run the 240v single cable to the boot of my car, for power tools or pumps for collecting veg oil, and bioling a kettle for a cuppa... and turned on via a switch on the dash, if i leave the main box switch in remote position

the 4x connectors say this, my thinking is this?

COMMON <----- Earth or negative ?
SWITCH ON <------ Positive or live ?
ON <----- maybe a light (fit a green LED) ?
FAILURE <----- maybe a light (fit a red LED) ?

what do you all think?

You'd really need a manual or diagram to be sure.  If it was me designing it for car use, I'd have it so you just put a switch between "switch on" and "common" to turn it on, with a 12V pull-up in the unit itself.  That way no need to also run a 12V supply remotely just to feed back to the unit.

Does the unit power on by itself as soon as the jump leads are connected?

At a 1000W, I don't think it would boil a kettle. Also, they tend to get hot, from what I have heard. Under the bonnet may not be the best place for it.

as above, join "common" to "switch on" to turn it on remotely

but... did it turn on when you connected it to the battery ? - because if it did you might have to mover a jumper etc.. to tell it you've connected the remote and not to turn it on until the remote is switched to the on position

the other 2 will be for warning lights

you could fit a tri colour led, and then have it go green for on and red for error.... I guess it'll switch over to error and shut down if you connect something to big too it and it shuts down to prevent damage :-)

better be somewhere nice for your cuppa. by the time you have boiled a kettle you will have fattened the battery. 1000 watts / 12 volts is 83 amps. say it takes 10 minutes to boil the kettle that is going to take 800 amps out of the battery. best keep the engine running. when they say 1000 watts max that is for peak current. it will be very hot by the time your tea is ready. still  you can keep the teapot warm on the smoking remains of the inverter.

no it doesnt turn on when jump leads are connected, it has a 3 way/position switch, you have to manually turn it to position, on is up, off is middle, and remote is down.

the kettle i use is a 600watt camper one, ,biols fast and it only uses 430 watts when being used, bioled with engine off, work a treat, also used me jigsaw and charges me dewalt drills :)

OK so when it's across a battery and not on, check the voltage on the "switch on" connector with a meter - if it's 12V then it's expecting to be connected to ground to start it up remotely.

For remote sense it shoudn't need anything special - whatever you've got to hand as signal wire.
