hi guys
friend of mine has a VW passat Y plate 2001 with a 1.9TDI 130BHP
we think its a PD what is a PD and what effect will it have on running veg?
-
A Pd is Pump Deuse... it has pump unit injectors and a total no no on veg IMHO.
-
ol biomotors says its a twin tank
PASSAT-1,9 TDI PD/2001-05/AVF/4cyl./1896ccm/96kW/130,56PS/BHP/4000min-1/BOSCH/UI/2-Tank-
it is an AVF engine seen it on there...
-
I'm with Steve on this RM. Run it on well made bio but personally I think that twin tanking something like this is a bad idea.
-
Is Biomotors still the "gospel" it used to be?
-
says bosch pump does it exist as i couldnt find it?

not sure

Each injector is part of a pump unit which is compressed by the camshaft, they are fired off several times per stroke, they are Bosch units. a high pressure pump driven by the end of the cam feeds the injector rail and is also a vac pump for the brakes. The fuel system has an electric in tank pump which runs for a few seconds to prime the system at startup.
The whole system can be a finicky beast even on derv.
The unit injectors retail at over £600 per unit and Vw's have them down as a 60K mileage life cycle !!
You can be lucky or unlucky with this engines fuel system ! !

thx for the heads up

Have a read here Paul . . . http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unit_Injector
The PD is mentioned specifically down the bottom of the page

thx jules

So how does the system manage advanced injection timing vs RPM (IE, the fuel must be injected earlier at higher RPM?)
Conventional IPs use internal fuel pressure to regulate injection timing (which is linear with RPM) - would be interesting to know how PD systems do it.
-
I don't know this for sure, but I think the injection timing is controlled electronically, with a signal from probably more than one sensor. The injection itself is started and stopped with a solenoid controlling a valve in the injector. This can also vary the time span of the injection.

not got any idea on these type engines, but on a side note the vehicle in question a Y reg 2001 vw passat 1.9tdi, seems very efficient running, the box is 6 speed, acceleration is phenominal and fuel economy very good, but as mentioned previously you get good and bad ones, so much on it to go tits up its scary... mixed in with VW parts prices, dont think i will be rushing out to get a PD version...

The injectors are triggered electronically.

They are good engines, the AVF has more torque than the AWX I have, and that pulls like a train. Look after them with the right oil changed regularly and they'll go on for a few hundred thousand miles.

They are a superb engine with amazing power and torque, highly tunable especially if you start with the 150 bhp coz it has a stronger crank and rods I think. Just a shame the injector units are so expensive.
