I'm sure it was therecklessengineer's Volvo that ran on some of my bio before a piston burnt through, though I'm sure he'll be along to elaborate!

Welcome!

Can't help with the bio bit as mine was a petrol, sorry.  However I had a Volvo S60 a while back and I've got to say it was a fabulous car.  Build quality and engineering made the German makes look like pedal cars.

Last time I drove a V70 I nearly put the passengers through the windscreen the first time I braked.  Some bite!  :o

Yes, I ran a 2002 Volvo V40 1.9 TD for about 40k miles on homebrew. I did have a slight problem of a piston going through the side of the block, but it kept going with a new engine (injection equipment was original). The engine had done 180k at the time - I put it down to a general failure, not bio related.

It then went to my parents who put another few k miles on it, and was sold only recently.

The engine was so flexible, I only used 1st, 3rd and 5th 90% of the time!

I do remember the handbrake position was difficult to reach if you were a short arse like me and you seriously needed reversing sensors, but those were the only bad points.

I had to do Surrey to Yorkshire on a regular basis.  After a non stop journey, could get out feeling like you'd just popped down the shops.

Tiamaria,

Welcome!  There are a good cross section of folk here, running all sorts of vehicles that have posted on here and VOD over the years including a number running new and newer vehicles with common rail, dpf's etc.

It's reasonable safe to say that if you and produce good, near spec fuel, it will run on anything with a slight caveat around dpf's for which the jury is out.  Manufacturers say "NO" but they've been saying that since before DPF's, in practice, I've not heard of anyone taking a dpf out as a result of bio, specifically and the are prone to failure on derv as a result of too much city driving.  Plus if you have one, it can always be removed, giving more mpg / power.

So the focus will need to be on getting a complete reaction, properly cleaning your crude fuel and ensuring that it's dry and well filtered.  Also be ready to do a few filter changes as any car run on Derv will have built up a varnish, which bio (having solvent properties) will flush out.

Tiamara I run a d5 xc90 on bio, 30000 miles so far one blocked filter(my own fault) bio boost and 5% petrol in the winter or 50% dino runs really well

Hi !

A Little late on replay but... Anyway I am a proud owner of Volvo 2.5 TDI ;D . I haven't run it on bio, because i have some hiccups in production of my own bio diesel. But I went to check in owners manual where they clearly say that you can run on bio so I am really happy because of this. I should get the production of bio up and running at lattes at the end of September, so after that I will post how the car is going.

Well hey, best of luck - and carry a spare fuel filter and the tools to change it if need be :)
